i want to start recording gameplay of my xbox 360and want to know if u can do it with any pvr ...ive been lookin online and most people use Hauppage HD PVR but i dont like that idea as they dont have a harddrive and no hdmi input. my set up is a xbox360 hdmi cable to a sony 46 inch full hd led. so can i use any pvr something with twin tuners and a 500gb -1tb harddrive in it like panasonic, sony, samsung ect? any and all info would be great

Re: PVR with HDMI-in and hard drive for recording from xbox videos without computer

I guess most game players use Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR because they like not only to record videos, but also to edit them and broadcast live gameplays. AFAIK you can't do it without a PC.

Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR uses component video for HD videos only, but most users won't see any difference. And one can always use AverTV USB HD DVR, Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle or any other recording device supporting HDMI input.

The HDMI specs includes a copy-protection scheme known as High-Definition Copy Protection (HDCP). So to use HDMI (and get the HDMI certification logo on your device), manufacturers need to ensure that their products are HDCP-compliant. That pretty much means that HDMI inputs are limited to display devices (like TVs, projectors) and repeaters (AV receivers and switchers). By definition, that HDCP-encoded video signal is designed to be unrecordable. That's why there are few recorders with an HDMI input.

Component video doesn't have any protection, so you can use it to record HD videos.

HDMI Inputs increase the quality of viewing when you connect your Blu-ray Disc players, AVCHD camcorders, personal computers (PCs) or video game consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

xbox 360 doesn't use HDCP for game plays, so grundig gdvr501fv should work for you. I'm not sure whether you will be able to watch your game play recordings on anything besides grundig gdvr501fv though.

Composite allows SD videos only. Component allows HD videos, so make sure a device has a component input.
