Recording with an external webcam on a macbook that has a built in camera


 
My son is trying to record his travels using an external webcam on a macbook (that has a built in camera). It is not working. Can anyone offer a suggestions as to how to do this. Manipulation of the external webcam is easier than the built in camera while driving. Thanks.
