Wanting to record 'CharlieRose.com' content...

 

I've used the 'clive' software (on Linux) for capturing from
YouTube, and it works well.

But, as I've learned, what program one uses to capture
depends alot on the exact technology that a particular
website is built with.

As I expected, 'clive' has no support for videos on charlierose.com.

Does anyone have any recommendation for a free tool that
will capture content from charlierose.com? :confused:

[I have slight preference for a tool for Linux platform, but
either Linux or Windows tools would be fine.] :cool:

That's plain HTTP streaming protocol, so in Windows, you could grab those videos with a tools like StreamTransport, NetTransport, IDM, GetFLV, an so on. And I'm afraid that you can do it easily in Linux too, if you discover the videos addresses wit a sniffer, and then use normal download tools.

If it is an HTTP stream, try to use Fast Video Download, a freeware Firefox extension that works in Linux, Windows and Mac OS.

And there are plenty of choices for Windows:

Hmm...sounds like an opportunity for me to learn some new/better
concepts for digging-down into detailed understanding of the
varieties of website differences.

Could you amplify just a bit, on 'discover the videos addresses with a sniffer'?
(I've used VLC-tool with Veetle streams, where I've had to
learn to cut/paste info that included details beyond simple URLs, that
include port-numbers, etc.) Maybe a ptr to a tutorial that mentions/demos
the details on such 'sniffer-use', that would be applicable to charlierose.com?

I notice that you say 'IF it is an HTTP stream...'.

My skills are not quite up to the task yet of determining
whether that is true or false.

Tho I don't understand the specifics yet of charlierose,com,
I DO know that it was entirely re-implemented
within the last six months or so, and uses a new
embedded player of some sort.

I can't play charlierose.com videos... may be due to the geo restrictions.

But it is very easy to install and use Fast Video Download. It will detect links to video and audio streams, so you don't need any port numbers or anything. If it doesn't work, then just let us know.

In Windows you can use software like Replay Media Catcher that detect streams and downloads/captures them automatically.

You can also use URL Finders / URL Snoopers / URL Sniffers and then download with programs like VLC.

For sniffing URLs in Linux, you may use Wireshark.

Great feedback...I'll be playing with some of those neat suggestions,
relating to sniffing/learning.

Meanwhile, just wanted to conclude this thread, by saying
that using the addon for capturing FLV (and others) in
the Firefox-browser, worked GREAT for me, for capturing
from CharlieRose.com.

[I mostly use Chrome-browser these days, but I'll continue
to use Firefox for some of these video-capturing needs.]

you can dowload programm from site rutube. i don't actually remember how it calls

is the software a share ware? or we need to register first before we can download? Since I want to use that for video editing stuffs and other recording projects.
