Webinar capture - Not smart enough to know what to ask yet

I stumbled onto this forum because I have a fairly specific application at this time. I know NOTHING about video capture.

I want to be able to record webinars. Most systems have a downloadable piece of software that sits on the client. Not sure if I can mention a specific webinar system/ service here or not, or if it matters.

Will a generic capture progarm do the job, or is every webinar company doing something proprietary to make it difficult? If generic, what software is a good place to start? A free trial/modest fee software would be fine. If proprietary, what questions do I ask next?

Will the resulting captured file be editable, and what format will it be in? Or if I get a choice, what format is best to be able to chop and resequence the webinar later? Will most any video editing program be okay ?

Thats all for now. Thanks to anyone who points me in the right direction !!

Most webinars can be recorded from screen with screen recorders. There are lots of them and some of them are 100% free. You can use MPEG-2, Windows Media as well as many other video codecs for recording from screen, so editing shouldn't be a problem.
