screen video capture software like ZD Soft Screen Recorder

Hi, I am here to recommend for a freeware screen recorder ZD Soft Screen Recorder. It can record into .avi and .wmv files with sound and great quality. It is best used with a fairly new computer but I have used it successfully on a Dell Dimension XPS B933 with pentium 3 933mhz and 128 mb ram recording an .asf file playing in Windows Media Player (1 hour 35 minutes) into .avi file with sound. (I couldn't convert file properly that is why.) Anyways, a plus on this screen recorder unlike others I have used (freeware) is that you don't have to disable hardware acceleration when recording movies/videos that are playing on computer. Why would you do that though? If for example you want a video/movie that you can't download or a nonconvertable file like .nsv you would use this screen recorder to record the movie/file playing. It works I have done this for several videos some a couple of minutes and others 1 hour +. By the way, I think you can download the last freeware version from www.download.com but don't download from main site unless you want a shareware version. Don't update yours either because it updates into shareware version. If you can't find the download, reply to this thread and I'll upload it for you. If you want to know the settings I use to record movies, reply to this thread.

Wich codec do you use and with wich settings.
I tried to capture a fullscreen .wmv movie and used the mpeg4 vki codec 3 to turn in into a .avi. The sound is great but the video is a but slow.

Wich are the best settings for you?

Oh you use this screen recorder, cool. I think it is the best. Anyways I use Matroska Pack with Ogg Direct Show Filters 0.9.9.6 for codecs. Settings are pretty much default except I didn't install avi portion of haali media splitter and disabled raw video (those interfere with Nero OEM suite 3). I also have all the codecs turned on (not disabled and except for raw video). I think it best to not capture full screen video rather you should make the video around 640x480 (as a suggestion, just not full screen) because it would be a smaller file size and easier to convert later. I haven't yet captured full screen though. When you use this program, you don't have to choose a compressor or a codec to make a file that is also a plus unlike others. For conversion I either use Windows Movie Maker, SUPER(c), or All to AVI. I mostly use the DIVX or XVID codec for those two. For the screen recorder settings-check record specified area, uncheck hide wallpaper, base fps 30 frames/sec, record sound-make sure stereo mix is selected (if possible and this is for recording sound coming from your computer (if nothing shows up it will probably record the sound anyways) (after recording video and playing the new file check to see if you like the sound otherwise adjust in settings of record sound area, advanced settings, etc., next thing to do is drag slider to high quality/large file, either select .avi, or .wmv and that should be it for settings.

By the way, you don't have to disable anything or overlays in Windows Media Player if you trying to record whatever is playing in there when using this recorder. I believe it is because of the video graphics accelerator that it installs that enables it to record just about anything that you can get on your screen I think I don't know about games though.

Some screen capture programs can record from overlay so you don't have to disable anything in WMP, QT or Real Player.

Free screen video capture software

ZD Soft Screen Recorder is no longer freeware. It is a screen video capture program that costs $39.

You may use CamStudio - absolutely free screen video capture program that can record audio as well as video.
