How to capture/record from HDMI with HDCP?

 

Is it possible to capture/record from HDMI with HDCP? I've tried Blackmagic Intensity Pro and it doesn't work (I can record from HDMI, but not with HDCP).

If you want to record from HDMI with HDCP you need to use the "Analog hole".
Convert HDMI to component video using HDFury2 and then record component video using your Blackmagic Intensity Pro. Unlike HDMI with HDCP, the video from component output is not encrypted, so it can be recorded. Since Intensity Pro has both HDMI and component inputs, you only need HDFury2 or any other HDMI to component video converter.

Please note that HDFury2 is not cheap and there are reasons for that. If you just buy a cheap HDMI to Component Video + Stereo Audio AV Cable, you won't be able to record videos with Intentsity Pro using it.

So you can use the following connections for recording HD videos from HDMI with HDCP sources:

[HDMI with HDCP Source] -> (HDMI cable) -> [HDFury2] -> (Component Cables) -> [Blackmagic Intensity Pro]



Alternatively you can use Hauppage HD PVR which is connected to computer via USB 2.0 and has a built-in h.264 encoder:

[HDMI with HDCP Source] -> (HDMI cable) -> [HDFury2] -> (Component Cables) -> [Hauppage HD PVR] -> (USB) -> [PC]

There are cheaper alternatives to HDFury2 if you don't need 1080p.

For example, ViewHD HDMI to Ypbpr Component RGB / VGA Converter. The Converter uses a single HDMI source accessing to single VGA+SPDIF sink or single Component YPbPr+SPDIF sink. With this ViewHD what card or device would be needed for the computer to record video? Something cheap I hope.

I recommend to use Hauppage HD PVR for recording 720p or 1080i videos.

Other options:
USB 2.0 HD video recorders for recording HD video of gameplays from xbox 360, PS3,...
USB 2.0 SD capture cards for recording SD video of gameplays from xbox 360, PS3,...
USB 3.0 HD capture cards for recording HD video of gameplays from xbox 360, PS3,...

The AverTV HD DVR is half the price of the Hauppage.

Am I just blowing my money on the AverTV one?

It uses software for video encoding, so make sure your computer is powerful enough to record 720p videos.

As for a USB 2.0 device from Aver with hardware h.264 encoding (AVerTV USB HD DVR), right now its price is identical to the price of Hauppage HD PVR.

And besides that, you can't get HDCP through the AverTV HD DVR i anyway, right?

If I understand it correctly, you could get 1080p with the AverTV if you wanted it (compared to the component video limit of 1080i in the Hauppage HD PVR), but no HDCP so you'd capture at something like 480i. Is that correct?
