How to print to PDF in Linux (alternative to PDFCreator, DoPDF, CutePDF Writer, ...)

Add a virtual PDF printer to Ubuntu or other Linux. Just install cups-pdf.

In Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala:
  1. Install cups-pdf by running the following in the Terminal:
    Code:

    sudo apt-get install cups-pdf
  2. Go to "System" -> "Printing" and hit the New button.
  3. Select "Generic CUPS-PDF printer" and hit the "Forward" button.
  4. Hit the "Apply" button.
Now you can print your documents into a PDF file. The PDF file will be placed into the "PDF" folder in your home directory.

Note that OpenOffice can export any of its formats to PDF, so sometimes you don't even need cups-pdf or any other virtual PDF printer.

And if you use Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can check "Print to file" in the Print dialog, select the PDF format (or PS) and enter the filename, then you can print your documented as a PDF file.
