Can you play your xbox360 on your laptop screen by plugging in your HDMI cable?

I'm trying to play my xbox360 on my laptop any ideas if the HDMI cable doesn't work

HDMI port on your laptop is used to output video only.

You need a capture card like Blackmagic Intensity Pro to show xbox 360 game play on your PC. Note the latter card uses PCI-Express interface, so it can be used on a desktop computer, not on a laptop.
