Tutorial: Enabling Wave Out recording in Windows Vista

If you tried to record audio from your sound card in Windows, for example Skype calls, webcasts, online radio stations, you may have learnt about simple settings allowing you to record any audio playing through the sound card of your computer:

How to set up Wave Out as your default output for recording in Windows Vista:

Open Control Panel
Select Sound from the Control Panel (or just click onto the sound icon in your system tray).
Click on the Properties tab.
Check the Recording box.
Make sure Wave Out Mix is selected (it can be also called stereo mix, mono mix, what you hear,...).
Now you should be able to set Wave Out as your default for recordings made by Sound Recorder or other direct sound recording software.

But, if you try the same trick with Windows Vista, you won't see an option for Wave Out Mix. It's not that the option's been left out of Vista, Microsoft just decided to hide it.

How to enabling Wave Out recording in Windows Vista

Go to Contol Panel
Select Sound from the Control Panel.
Select the Recording tab.
Right click on the background of the tab and choose "Show disabled devices."
Right click on Wave Out Mix and click Enable.
Now it should work the same way as Wave Out Mix in Windows XP, allowing you to record any sound your computer makes.
