How to run Firefox for Windows on Linux with Wine

Wine lets you run Windows software on other operating systems like Linux and Mac OS. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would on Windows. Wine is free and doesn't need a Windows license.

How to install Firefox for Windows on Linux like Ubuntu 9.10
  • Install Wine using Ubuntu Software Center, your favorite package manager or from Terminal:
    Code:

    sudo app-get install wine
  • Download Firefox for Windows.
  • Right-click on the downloaded file and select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader"
  • Install Firefox (the same way you usually install any Windows software)

How to run Firefox for Windows on Ubuntu 9.10
  • Go to Applications -> Wine -> Programs -> Mozilla Firefox and select Mozilla Firefox

Why do you need to run Firefox for Windows on Linux?
  • To use browser extensions that work on Windows only
  • To play flash video in web-browsers for Windows
Any other ideas?

Re: How to run Firefox for Windows on Linux with Wine

The next thing you may want to do is to install Adobe Flash Player.

How to install Adobe Flash Player for Windows in Linux:
  1. Download Firefox for Windows.
  2. Right-click on the downloaded file(install_flash_player.exe) and select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader"
  3. Install Adobe Flash Player. Ignore any warnings or error messages.

Can I really play flash videos from web-sites like YouTube on Linux using Firefox for Windows and Adobe Flash Player for Windows?
You definitely can! I just tested it on Ubuntu 9.10. Here are screenshots with YouTube videos not only being watched with Firefox for Windows, but also being recorded with Replay Media Catcher 3.11 for Windows:
