General video stream recording FAQ

Before using any stream recording software you should learn how to get stream URLs.

One of the best and easiest ways of getting stream URLs is by using URL Finder (URL Snooper, URL Sniffer) software like free Project URL Snooper.

After getting stream URL you may choose a stream recorder taking into account the format of a stream you wanna record (Windows Media, Real Video, Quick Time video, Flash Video, Nullsoft video,...). Our chart All streaming video recording software may help you in choosing the right recorder.

A few of our PREFERRED Stream Recorders are Replay Media Catcher and WM Recorder

IMPORTANT NOTE: When using Replay Media Catcher or WM Recorder in AUTO recording mode, you don't have to worry about getting stream URLs 'coz your streams will be saved to hd automatically.

Automatical audio/video stream recording - Does this software exist?

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and stream recording so be gentle. I have tabbed the majority of topics in this forum and actively digging through them but haven't seen anything related yet. More t read though. Is there any software that will crawl a URL and identify any links that point to a video stream then automatically grab the stream automatically similar to how some download managers will crawl a site looking for files of a specific type?

It would be nice if the stream could be recorded by a process that starts up in the background and doesn't really need to be 'played' on the desktop just fool the streamer into thinking it is. Maybe the streams could be recorded a couple at a time instead of single threaded.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanx a lot for a very interesting question.

Offline Explorer Pro is an offline browser so it can download complete web-site (or selected directories and files). It supports Windows Media audio and video, Real Audio/Video streams as well as QuickTime HTTP streams. So it can download web-sites with or without streaming media content automatically. The only disadvantage is that it is rather pricey.

NetTransport is a download manager. It supports the same media stream formats. And you may use its Site Explorer to download media streams from a directory or web-site semi-automatically.

WM Recorder is a stream recorder supporting Windows Media, Real Audio/Video, Flash .FLV HTTP video streams and QuickTime HTTP streams. It can make automatical recordings, but in a different way. It can record the above mentioned streams automatically when you play them with a player or with an embedded player in a browser window.

well, all this tools (URL Finder, URL Snooper, URL Sniffer) uses the WinPcap packet capture driver. Is there free programs that does not use WinPcap? For example, WM Recorder have three modes to capture url, one mode is 'URL mode' that use internet explorer to capture links, not via network adapter. Is there similar freeware utilities?

Please see URL Finders List. There you may find that say Replay A/V and WM Recorder use other methods of getting URLs.

Replay Media Catcher can record streaming .FLV video and .MP3 audio streamed through the RTMP or HTTP protocol. The only thing you need to do to capture from embedded Macromedia flash player is to click "Start recording".

Replay Media Catcher also supports Windows Media, Real Audio/Video streams. All these streams are also downloaded automatically.

I don't think there are any URL Finders for the Mac, but you may try to use packet sniffers that support protocols used by media streams. Sorry, but I can't suggest you any of them ATM.
