How can i get always connection with my home network extern harddisk

I am searching for a method to get access to my extern hard disk wherever I am, so I can stream music and films. I think that the best way to do this is to connect my extern hard disk with my router (netgear) and find a way to get access to my router at any time. i have tried a ftp server but than i can't stream from my external hard disk.

I use Mac OS Lion and would like to use time machine.

Does some of you know a way to do this?
Thanks for your help and sorry for my english its not my first language.

Jesse

hello,

I'm totally new in this forum, but you can use subsonic, I think in the last version you can stream video as well.

On the other hand, you can use "no-ip.org" to get a dinamic dns to access to your computer. And if i'm not wrong, if you colaborate with subsonic proyect, they provide you a dinamic dns, but I've never try it.

I hope it helps.
