Jaksta for Mac & connected thru VPN: stream ripping fails

Hello everyone,

This is my first post to the forum and I'm hoping I can get some advice from some of the pros around here.

I've been using Jaksta happily enough to grab videos from YouTube mostly, but I've run into a problem since I started using an SSL VPN service to get access certain sites that are restricted by geographic location.

I use the VPN to access sites like Hulu in the US and BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Unfortunately Jaksta can't seem to "listen" to any of these streaming video streams when I'm connected to the VPN. I know some of the reasons why this might be the case, but I'm not sure of a potential fix.

Can anyone give some advice about how I might be able to rip these streams while connected to the VPN?

I'm using a Mac, so are there any other suggestions for a better solution if Jaksta can't do this?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Regards,
Cog

The reason why it can't listen to a VPN connection is because its network driver isn't listening to the VPN connection. You'll have to find a way to install its driver to the VPN connection. I could be wrong though since I only used the Windows version of Jaksta SMR.

Some routers allow to set up a VPN connection.

Also make sure to contact the developer and suggest the feature that you need.

i am quoting everything you said.
sorry but this is all nonsense.
Hulu and iplayer are rtmpe based streams. Jaksta does not support rtmpe streams.

this has nothing to do with vpn.

i download the hulu and iplayer streams with any type of vpn connection, no problem. Take a stream recording tool which OFFICIALLY supports hulu and iplayer. GetFLV and TubeDigger come to my mind.

And if GFLV and TD are supported on Windows systems only and you own a Mac instead, guess whose problem is this?

For sure its not my problem, and for sure its not Hulu's problem, and it's not getflv's nor TubeDigger's problem either.

If you have a Mac, and GFLV supports Hulu on Windows WITH VPN CONNECTION, then its pretty clear what the problem is. ;)

BBC iPlayer used RTMP streams as well.

To download/capture RTMPE streams on a Mac for free, you may install linux like Ubuntu onto VirtualBox. Then use rtmpdump with rtmpsrv, rtmpsuck. I must admit, that this won't be easy for most Mac users.

I also use Jaksta for Mac and have the same issue as the OP. I can record, for example, a YouTube video using the software, but if I access the same page through a VPN, Jaksta will not download the video. (Not that I want to use it for YouTube, that's just an example).

I wrote to the developer about this back in May, this is the reply from their technical support:

"At this time, unfortunately Jaksta cannot support VPNs at this stage. The networking side is complex and often different for each VPN product. This will be something that the developers will work on/out in the future.
Sorry for any inconvenience."

Re: Jaksta stream ripping while connected to VPN

To say it out loud, the problem is that you are using MAC.

On a Windows system you can connect to ANY vpn and then go to youtube (not Hulu!!) and then launch Jaksta and then record the youtube stream (=download!) losslessly.

"Jaksta for Mac" is different product from "Jaksta".
And "Mac" is different from "Macintosh".

On Windows, we dont have any problems with vpn and Jaksta.
On Mac, you do have problems with vpn and Jaksta (according to you); BAD NEWS: since you're on a Mac there is no solution to your problem, sorry. (other than wait)

Why are you trying to tell me things which I either already know or are not relevant to me? For clarification:

1. I'm not the OP
2. I'm not trying to download Hulu or iPlayer using Jaksta. I haven't even asked a question in this thread.
3. Jaksta for Mac has problems with VPNs - not according to me, but according to them. I thought the OP might be interested to read what they wrote.

Sounds like you're getting pissed at the wrong person.

i was not talking to you solely. the post is addressed to anybody who is reading the thread, both confused Windows users and knowing Mac users alike. the original thread title was misleading enough, i've changed it.

yeah, time to get pissed! :D

We now know that there is no solution for MAC users other than waiting (for the developer to release an updated Mac version) or uninstalling MAC OS and re-installing Windows.

No need to uninstall Mac OS. It is possible to use double boot or install Windows onto a virtual machine like freeware VirtualBox or commercial Parallels Desktop for Max OS X.

You can also run some Windows applications on a Mac using WINE. Alhtough in case of VPN and Jaksta WINE is not a solution.

Setting up VPN on Mac http://www.vpnanswers.com/setup-openvpn-server-mac/ according to my experience this is the best one with secured and encrypted tunnel.
