Kindle Removal Drm Error: .azw4 (New extension?)I've been around the forums a bit, and finally came to a problem.
The book i bought was a .azw4 file (I suppose a new extension) the tools didn't recognize them. I renamed it to .azw and it took a while but processed out a file, but when opening in Calibre it shows the cover & the second page being random letters/symbols (metadata?) Has anyone come up with an idea for this, or hit the same problem? |
Re: Kindle Removal Drm Error: .azw4 (New extension?)What version of Kindle software and what OS do you use?
Have you tried to download the same book with an older version of a Kindle app? |
Re: Kindle Removal Drm Error: .azw4 (New extension?)Hi,
If the tools did not provide a bunch of error messags, then I doubt this is any completely new format. My guess is that either you are using an older version of the tools or this file has slightly different handling of the encoding or trailing data info than what the tools expect. Please make sure you are using tools_v4.6 and that you have removed any old K4MobiDeDRM plugins and Mobi plugins from Calibre. If you still have problems, I would do as the plugin ReadMe states and try the calibredb add command to generate a log of the error messages and post them to the comments at the ApprenticeAlf blog where the authors of these plugins can see it and have a chance to look at it. Asking at the source of the tools (where the tools authors can be found) on the ApprenticeAlf site is a better place to get these types of problems resolved. |

I downloaded the latest version of Calibre and the tools (4.6). I'm guaranteed to not have any issues with previous installs, as I had not used either tool before. Like willitoo, I had to rename the .azw4 file to the .azw extension for it to be recognized. After importing, the file showed the same issues described: the cover was successfully converted, but the remainder of the text was unconverted. I'd be glad to help someone more knowledgeable solve this problem. If it would help, I can dump the first page of the unconverted portion to pastebin or somewhere. |

http://amzn.com/gp/help/customer/dis...amin media-20 I'm sure the current tools won't work properly on them. I'm not sure the current developers would be interested in removing DRM from rented books, and it seems likely that any tool that could remove the DRM from purchased "Print Replica" kindle ebooks would also work on the rented versions. Amazon do offer refunds on Kindle books, so I'd suggest that anyone who's unhappy with DRMed books should return them for a refund. |

Apart from the need for a firmware update to allow the Kindle to read the new format, I suspect that the reading experience on a Kindle would be very poor. They are introducing it for the college textbook market. |

The current DeDRM tools won't help. |
Re: Kindle Removal Drm Error: .azw4 (New extension?)I also came across one of these just now. I was hoping I would be able to read it on my Android device and ended up calling and requesting a refund once I found this thread.
Update: I realized that Google sold the same eBook with Adept PDF DRM, I had to strip it for my use on my device by using the Calibre plugins. That won't help digamma though, I saw his book isn't carried by Google, so it's unfortunate that this new Amazon format does not support mobile devices... Further, I just even noticed that some Android apps (txtr, Alkido) will actually work with Adept encrypted books, although I haven't tried it, it was easier to just strip the DRM and not worry about it. :) That being said, Amazon should give the option of having these new books readable with their mobile apps for those who want to, regardless of the (perhaps clunky) user experience. |

As pdurrant suggested, anyone having this issue should call Amazon (800-201-7575) and do the same. |
Re: Kindle Removal Drm Error: .azw4 (New extension?)It works. Just change the extension on the file from azw4 to azw and the Calibre plugin will decrypt it as usual. Calibre won't be able to read the resulting file, but that is only because the extension in wrong. Click the button to show the decrypted file and change the extension from mobi to pdf. Now double click to open in your favorite pdf reader.
Edit: This works on OS X with Preview.app anyway, other programs I've tried don't recognize it. |
Re: Kindle Removal Drm Error: .azw4 (New extension?)DRM Tools 4.7 comes with DRM removal tools allowing to remove protection from legally purcased (not rented) Amazon Print Replica (.azw4) ebooks.

Re: Kindle Removal Drm Error: .azw4 (New extension?)I have tried everything to verify your last statement and have no idea how to make it work. How do I remove the drm from a purchased azw4 file???
|
Re: Kindle Removal Drm Error: .azw4 (New extension?)Does this remove the drm? Nothing seems to want to work with my textbook file.
