www.netflix.com: How to capture streaming Netflix movies

Netflix is a movie rental company that sends movies directly to your home. Members also have the Watch Instantly feature, which allows them to instantly watch certain movies and television shows online directly on their home computers using a web-browser. If you want to capture Watch Instanly streaming movies and save them onto your computer, read the following guide.

How to capture/record/save/download/snatch/keep/grab streaming Netflix movies
  1. Download Replay Media Catcher 4. This program allows you to save streaming video files from different websites, including Netflix, and save them directly to your computer.
  2. Open Replay Media Catcher by double-clicking on the icon on your desktop (or launch it from the start menu). The program opens in a new window and offers several different options. Leave it while you go to Netflix web-site.
  3. Log into your Netflix account, select one of the videos. Let it finish buffering, but press "Play" before it actually begins playing the video. It may take several minutes to finish buffering, depending on your connection speed.
  4. Hit the "Start Recording" button at the bottom of the Replay Media Catcher window. The "Start Recording" button looks like a large red button. This allows to start recording any streaming audio and video files you're playing in your web-browser. They will be saved onto your computer's hard drive automatically.
  5. Go to "Transfer" -> "Play Media" and select the file you just recorded (downloaded/captured) from Netflix. This gives you the chance to make sure the entire video recorded so you can watch it again at a later time.

The video captured from Netflix is saved automatically. You can rename it by going to "Transfer" -> "Rename" and giving the file a new name.

Note: Replay Media Catcher can record (download or capture) several different streaming audio/video files at one time. You can capture Netflix videos and videos from other sites simultaneously. But we recommend you to record one video from Netflix at a time only.

Note: You can't capture Netflix movies by using Firefox or any of its extensions (add-ons).

I thought Netflix used Silverlight on which it sends tiny/different packets instead of a WHOLE stream ?

I don't have Netflix to try it. But Replay Media Catcher 4 supports SmoothStreaming MajorVersion 2 and 1 as well as Windows Media streams, so this should work (unless DRM protection and/or non-standard manifest is used).

What kind of error exactly do you get when trying to play?
Also make sure your recordings don't have 0 file size.

Re: www.netflix.com: How to capture streaming Netflix movies

--- Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

---vlc nothing---goes to player but wont play

----nero--cannot play--file is either corrupt or the application does not support the format you are trying to play

---files vary in size from 476kb to 789 kb--many files

thanks

Re: www.netflix.com: How to capture streaming Netflix movies

If you get dozens or hundreds of small files, then it is probably better to record from screen.

WMP won't play many files unless you install codecs or a codec pack such as K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Usually if I can't play videos with VLC and SMPlayer, I give up.

If you don't have any buffering problems when watching Netflix, you can use a screen recorder. The recording quality depends on the video codec and its settings.

Yeah, screen recorder should do it for you to capture Netflix streaming videos and movies.
Suppose *** should also do the trick for netflix watch instantly, worked fine the last time I used it.

i am posting this only for the purpose of our records. okay here we go:

Netflix streams a movie (during a single session) from mixed servers:
*.wmv from http://***.lcdn.nflximg.com/***
*.wma from http://***.lcdn.nflximg.com/***
*.wmv from http://***.nflximg.com.edgesuite.net/***
*.wma from http://***.nflximg.com.edgesuite.net/***
*.wmv from http://***.vo.llnwd.net/***
*.wma from http://***.vo.llnwd.net/***

So original URL's look like this:

Any URL sniffer can catch the url's (Replay Media Catcher, GetFLV, ..) -- they are as you can see http links and the streaming servers are the well-known CDN servers by llnwd, edgesuite, ..

From what i can tell, the media snippets are "transferred from the servers to your browser" (obviously!) but they are not saved on hdd (unless you download them with Replay Media Catcher). In other words, there is no caching of the video chunks. They seemed to get used up (or eaten up :) ) by the Silverlight player, and gone they are!

The WMV's and WMA's are "hundreds" of little files, and our media players cant play them. It is safe to assume that those media files are protected in some way and that they need decryption thru the player. The website (or the webplayer) seems to be based on Microsoft Silverlight technology, with probably no DRM involvement. (DRM is something of the very past. Windows Media Player times. yawn.) In any case it is impossible to play them unless some clever SRF boardie finds a medicine ;)

In early Netflix times, there was a "Download"-button. That must have been a thing of the past as well. There is no more DOWNLOAD button. When you hit play, the movie plays. Instantly. No introductory "video page / videopage", no presentation of the video like scope/synopsis/description, nothing. You click "Play" (see screenshot below), and then Netflix opens the video (in the same browser window). Very primitive, but also very easy. You cannot get confused! :p

I dont think that i am telling something new here. Netflix seems to be a huge success in the USA, and there are hundreds webpages and websites which try to explain whether and how it is possible to capture Netflix videos in original quality. Some people (incl. bloggers) have even programmed some script/software for it (~Netflix downloaders). I have no personal interest in Netflix contents so whoever is interested might find some solution with google. If you find anything (e.g. a still working script/program), then feel free to share it here with the SRF community.

Re: www.netflix.com: How to capture streaming Netflix movies

,

never again netflix. i was able to play the Netflix movie with FREE vpn and save fragmented mp4 files but these files are protected by PlayReady DRM which AFAIK is not yet cracked.

If you have a media player like WDTV, Seagate and a tv tuner card or capture card you can record Netflix streams.

Hi, Can anyone confirm if GetFLV is capable of downloading Netflix movies and choosing the desired Quality (for instance, HD) ?
