Guide: How to install Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7

Guide: How to install Windows Media Player (WMP) 10 in Windows 7
  1. Remove Media Components from Windows 7:
    1. In the Control Panel select Programs and Features.
    2. Click "Turn on and off Windows Components".
    3. Uncheck "Media features"
    4. Hit the "OK" button.
  2. Restart
  3. Download and unpack WMP10 installer
  4. For each and every .INF file in the folder with unpacked files except for wmp10.inf, right click on the .INF file and select "Install". Ignore the error messages that this type of installation is not supported and do NOT restart your computer.
  5. Install wmp10.inf as mentioned above
  6. Restart your computer
  7. Disable Program Compatibility Assistant:
    1. Open command prompt from the Start menu (or press WIN+R).
    2. Enter gpedit.msc and press Enter.
    3. Navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Application Compatibility. Then on the left side under "Setting" double click on "Turn off Compatibility Assistant".
    4. Click on "Enabled", then click the "Apply" button and the "OK" button.
    5. Close the Local Group Policy Editor.
  8. Run registry editor like regedit and delete the following keys:
    Code:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ MediaPlayer \ Setup
Do everything in the "Safe mode" as administrator if you get compatibility problems.
Now you should be able to use Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7. It should play music and show visualization just fine.

Well, if you went through the above steps you SHOULD be good....did you double check the steps above and make sure you copied them exactly?

Re: Guide: How to install Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7

I double checked and did follow the directions. There isn't a shortcut in my start menu, so I start it right from the Program Files/Windows Media Player folder. When I click on the wmplayer application icon I get this pop-up window:

Does that help with what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks!

How can I get this to work in Windows 7 x64? I would love to have Windows Media Player 10 again! :)

When I run the executable I receive an error saying it will only run on Windows XP 32bit. Is there another version of the installer?

I download Windows Media Player 10 from Microsoft
Code:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/2/A/12A31F29-2FA9-4F50-B95D-E45EF7013F87/MP10Setup.exe
and tried to install it in Windows 7 Professional x64. I got the same compatibility problem:

I've tried several compatibility modes for setup_wm.exe to no avail.

Re: Guide: How to install Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7

Thanks for posting the tip on how to get WMP on Windows 7.

I did exactly as you instructed.
-Download the file from microsofts website
-unpacked the files in a folder
-right-click installed every inf file except for the wmp10.inf
-right click installed wmp10.inf

-restarted.

Clicked on all 3 setup links and got an incompatible message.

Now, I am disappointed, but I want to find the cause.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. Hopefully you have a different system and maybe thats the reason.

WMP 11 and 12 are so needlessly complex, as is Windows 7.

People bitch and complain about everything they said that XP was so tedious while 7 is 'revolutionary' and such.

Well to be honest, I prefer XP, and I am looking to get an XP template for 7 to at least have the format instead of bleak, lifeless vista 7.

Anyway, Im rambling, my real gripe is that programs such as WMP 10 and IE7 cant be downloaded onto a higher OS (does that make sense?)

But yea, when you find out, let me know what version of 7 you have

so this is what the russian part says in English

Quote:

I told him everything in order:
1) Go to "Programs and Features" tidy bird "Components of multimedia content, thereby tidy up all the media in the bowels of Windows 7 systems
2) Restart
3) Extracting ustanovochnik WMP10 archiver in a folder
4) Choose the folder in the files ***. inf (except wmp10.inf), then the PTP - install. When the message "This type of installation is not supported" shake OK, when prompted to restart refuse (launch files 2 times to make sure that)
5) File wmp10.inf PTP - set (the analog of item 4)
6) Restart
And, voila, working! (Ie start, reproduce, visualization works, after the collapse normally locked, not playing music on) Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7 operating system

How would I get this to work in Vista (not Windows 7)?

I'm running Vista Home Premium (6.0.6000) and am unable to upgrade to 7 at the moment.

According to this thread: http://stream-recorder.com/forum/ins...sta-t1076.html it is possible to do it but the file has been removed from Rapid$hit.

I even tried to follow the instructions here for Win7 but they didn't work for me.

Thanks.

Re: Guide: How to install Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7

I did it.
Its workin' here on my 7 ultimate.

the trick is Disable Program Compatibility Assistant
and delete Installed Versions from regedit

I talked to that Russian guy that did it.

steps

1. Remove Media Components from Windows 7:
*A. In the Control Panel select Programs and Features.
*B. Turn windows features on or off.
*C. Uncheck "Media features"
*D. Hit the "OK" button.
2. Restart
3. Download and unpack WMP10 installer
4. For each and every .INF file in the folder with unpacked files except for wmp10.inf, right click on the .INF file and select "Install". Ignore the error messages that this type of installation is not supported, installation failed and do NOT restart your computer.
5. Install wmp10.inf as mentioned above
6. Restart your computer
7.Disable Program Compatibility Assistant.
*A.Enter gpedit.msc (press Windows key + R and run it)
*B. Navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Application Compatibility. Then on the left side under "Setting" double click on "Turn off Compatibility Assistant".
*C. Click on "Enabled", then click the "Apply" button and the "OK" button.
*D. Close the Local Group Policy Editor.
8.Run regedit and delete the "Installed Versions" in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ MediaPlayer \ Setup

Try to do everything in "safe mode" as administrator if you get compatibility problems
Safe mode:
* Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
* Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
* Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected, not Repair Your Computer
* Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
* When you are finished with troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would

Hi All!
Noob, jumping on this bandwagon :D

I am running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Managed to unpack the WMP10 download from Microsoft with 7zip and installed all the inf files except wmp10.inf.
Didn't get any problems doing this.

I had already deleted the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ MediaPlayer \ Setup
and had done all the gpedit changes before hand.
I thought I had succeeded (had installed from the unpacked exe file instead of the inf file) as I ended up with the WMP install screen process, but when I restarted it is not installed.

I then did it with the wmp10.inf file and I get the message below.

Is the sequence of actions to do this really important? - Do I basically need to reinstall the whole operating system to reset the registry and all that and start again?

Am a bit lost now - any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Jonny

Did you uninstall wmp 12 first?

Although wmp 10 doesn't have a x64 bit version.......:p
Make changes on regedit is dangerous, you should be careful.....:)
If you want to, the russian guy (the creator of this "method" ) speaks english, talk to him.

Best wishes and hope your pc be fine

Re: Guide: How to install Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7

Hi there :)

Another question: what does wmp10.inf PTP mean - the PTP part I don't understand? (in D2eux post on page 2 from the translation from Russian post)

To answer:Yep, I uninstalled WMP12 to begin with and restarted.

I have now gone through and sytematically returned everything to factory state - I'll try again soon (was very frustrated the first time!) :p

I think you might be right - a chat with the russian guy might be the ticket. Will do that inthe next couple of days. Frustrating to get the different error message to you guys
(This software will only work on Windows XP 32bit or whatever it says)

PC is all good besides this - though I have installed classic start menu to make Windows Explorer nicer. Internet Explorer 7 would be nice too - one thing at a time I guess!

Cheers, Jonny

Re: Guide: How to install Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7

I was wrong! No GPEDIT in Home Premium - boo! :p

I found this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/i...ySettings.xlsx

It's from here: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/unrave...-policy-editor

From what I understand it is a spreadsheet which lists the relevant Registry Entries for each Group Policy Setting. So that should hook you up. I've downloaded it as well, but don't have Office 2007 installed at the mo, so can't check it out...

FWIW, I never managed to get WMP10 installed on Win7 - much to my frustration. I am currently experimenting with Media Monkey, which comes close, but still isn't as good as WMP10.
Why the he** do Microsoft stop us using their own software? - It makes absolutely no sense!

Good luck! :)

Re: Guide: How to install Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7

So the info from jondoe666 has got me closer to having it installed on Win7 Ultimate x64...thanks!

It is in the programs folder, it opens from the desktop shortcut and it plays mp3 files from my hard-drives.
BUT...
-> I can't access some of the menus, ie Tools/Options to change settings - the menu drops down but nothing happens when I click on the menu item I want.
-> CD's play, but no audio from speakers (works with MediaMonkey).
-> When I try and rip a CD I get Error 0xC00D0FAA - (WMP cannot rip the track because a compatible MP3 encoder is not installed etc etc). I have searched for this and checked all suggestions with no success.

I have WMP10 installed in a virtual machine as well and I copied all registry entries from the XP Virtual machine relating to Media Player and added them to my Win7 Registry but that hasn't helped either.

We're getting closer! Any advice?

Re: Guide: How to install Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7

Well "RealPlayer Alternative" would be the answer to the DRM issue
http://download.cnet.com/Real-Altern...-10698783.html

At the moment I'm using MediaMonkey because it has the file tree type navigation that I love in WMP10, but it's annoying that MM doesn't have gapless playback. Heaps of requests in their support forums but as yet no joy...
MM seems to be the closest thing I have found to WMP10 in the way it works and the sort features. I actually really like it!
For video I am using COWON Jet Audio - it plays everything I throw at it and has a good left-hand navigation system as well.
The search for player all-in-one happiness continues...
