i am interested in video capturing from silverlight from the nbcolympics.com website. my usual methodologies aren't working (Orbit Grab++, WM Recorder, etc.)

any ideas anyone?

You can try to record with the latest version of Replay Media Catcher. Also you can try to use nbcolympics.com without Silverlight (It seems like they allow it in the Internet Explorer only)

This year NBC has teamed up with Microsoft (MSFT) to provide a wealth of Olympics footage at If you're really into specific events that aren't shown over your broadcast TV station, then you can likely watch them online. Very cool.

The Microsoft contribution is via the Silverlight video player, which you must install in order to watch video. Few video providers use Silverlight, which is why there are no programs (yet) that can record those feeds via stream capture.

If you're looking to record some of these events and save them forever, the best program to use is WM Capture. This on-screen recorder makes great quality videos from the Olympic feeds.

To burn these recordings to DVD, try the new Replay Converter 3.0, which is currently in beta. You can also make iPod format videos, or AVI files to import them into your favorite video editor.

UPDATE: I noticed that you need to enter a zip code and your Cable provider to watch some online feeds. Try 94118 and ComCast Digital if you're disallowed access.

I could not use Replay Media Catcher to record an olympic video as I could not find the videos url.

I used WM Recorder 12 which recorded the videos only in .asf and to many problems. VLC would only play the audio with grayed out video. Windows Media Player played both but was horribly choppy but in a rhythmic pattern.

This could be a connection problem because I'm on terrible ISP atm.

What do you think? I would like to record some fencing as I really enjoy the technology they use now.

It was a connection problem! I reduced the size video size in my browser and the recorded video has much less lag. What type of file should I be looking for when browsing the video pages source code. I don't want to be streaming it through IE while I'm downloading it and whenever I close IE the download stops.

WM Capture is the only way to save the "rewind" or prerecorded streams. WM Recorder or Replay Media Catcher will save the "live" streams.

Thanks so much Big! I didn't about capture! I will post my success or failure. This is a great idea considering how exclusive some of these videos are. Surely most of them will sadly dissapear from the public eye in time.

I was able to record live streams from WM Recorder, but to get the replay ones I will try Capture.

I am curious about Silverlight, when you record a live match it is a direct stream copy...is there any encryption that can directed back to the recorder? They say it uses different DRM than usual WMV videos.

I'm guessing WM Capture doesn't have this problem as it is a screen recorder not a packet capturer.

Hi Deff,

Just teasing of course. :-) Silverlight is pretty new. Being that you're not recording from the file itself, but rather just capturing the stream as it plays on your screen, there is no way that they could even begin to guss you're recording. Your'e safe, don't worry. :-)

Yea, I know its safe to use WM Capture since its purely analog, but im talking about if I record a stream from a live event using WM Recorder/packet sniffer(you can do that with WM Recorder with their live streaming videos)

The reason I ask is because they say that they have digitally watermarked the videos, so they can telll where they came from. Im not familiar with Silverlight, I usually record from encrypted wmv streams only.
Does silverline add any of my computers info into the video so that it can be tracked to my pc/IP? Sounds a bit bizzare if they would do this, but I dont know, there isnt even drm on the files they stream...seems too easy.

You know, i'm not a programmer of this type of software so I can't say for 100% certain. But from what I understand from Alex (the WMR programmer)...all they think is that you're just another happy customer watching their videos and they have no way of knowing if your'e watching it, or recording it..looks the same to them. :)

Streaming video recorders should be used as personal archiving tools only. It means that you shouldn't distribute any recorded content. And obviously if you don't distribute anything, there is no difference whether a content provider is using watermarks or not.

When recording streaming content, you can be tracked in many cases. WM Recorder in the PRO mode (when recording Windows Media and Real Media streams), FLV Recorder and MovRecorder capture packets from your local computer. Other media stream recorders usually create a separate thread for recording (another one is used for playing your stream), that is why theoretically you can be detected.

'Yea ive noticed that, when I used to use proxy mode sometimes my stream I was watching would get cut (since there were 2 treams running). I use adapter mode now, I dont think adapter mode does this if I am not mistaken.

You can read more about WM Recorder in its User guide. ADA mode is more reliable. However it is the PRO mode that allows to capture packets from your local Windows Media Player or Real Player, thus allowing you to record password-protected streams and some other streaming content that is hard to record.

Big Dog, can WM Recorder be used to schedule recordings ? Also, is there some reason that WM Recorder can record the Olympic Broadcasts and Replay AV 8 can't? TX:confused:

Yes WM Recorder can Schedule Recordings, and quite well actually. Check out this portion of their User Guide for info on how to do this.

Also, WM Recorder should NOT be able to Record the olympics from nbcolympics.com as it's silverlight, and pretty difficult to capture by the means WM Recorder records. If it can record it, I would imagine it patchy at best. I've been in touch with the WM Capture/WM Recorder programmer PERSONALLY, and he assured me the best and only means for now at least, is WM Capture.

How about if you just uninstall Silverlight? I am trying to get Phelps #7 medal from the official NBC Olympics site. Does uninstalling Silverlight make the capture any better or easier?

On most of the Olympic site pages, if you don't have Silverlight installed you get a button under the small embedded video to "Enlarge Video" on the main page and the clip still plays. If you have Silverlight installed, that option is greyed out, and the video pops up in a separate, new large window.

Has anybody found a source for these clips yet? I have tried everwhere, including capturing from Verizon VCast and then hacking the phone filesystem. The YouTube links for the real NBC flicks are being taken down as fast as they go up.

Thank's Big Dog. I've been using WM Capture but it's been freezing on me A LOT. I'm waiting for a response from tech support on the problem. Hopefully I'll get it before NBC pulls the files from their site :-( Thanks again.

Are videos on this web-site keep freezing when you watch them? Or do you have problems with WM Capture only? What format do you record to?

I believe it is WM Capture that is freezing because I am having the same problem. Not a huge deal, I will just rerecord from the point of freezing and splice them together with VirtualDub or something. I am outputting to MPEG-2 with highest bitrate and frame settings.
