bbc.co.uk:Can't download rtsp:// RealMedia .rm and RealAudio .ra files from BBC radioHi. First post here, so be gentle..!
I'm trying to download a Real Media stream from the BBCs Listen Again pages (bbc.co.uk). I've got a link to the .rm file (rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/radio2/r2_genesis.ra) but when I try to put it into WackGet (or any other download manager I've got) nothing happens or I get a message like "The requested download could not complete". I'll admit to being new to this - I got the link to the file by using URLSnooper, but now I'm stuck. Also, the BBC take the link away after one week, which is this coming Saturday! Any help much appreciated. |
Re: Can't download rm file from BBCFew download managers can capture Real audio/video streamed through the RTSP protocol. You may find ones as well as other stream recorders on the following pages:
All streaming media recording software All streaming audio recording/ripping software You may use stream recorders like WM Recorder, Replay A/V as well as doanload managers like NetTransport or even offline browser Offline Explorer Pro (if you need to download many audio streams as well as HTML pages with pictures,...),.... |
BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?Dear Stream Recorder,
Quote:
WM Recorder is really my favorite stream recording software. Why would I prefer to use it with BBC? Because I record not only web radio, but also TV shows (like my favorite BBC hi tech show The Click). BBC offers video streams in Real video and Windows Media format. Windows media is much easier to record so I prefer to save it to hd instead of Real Video. WM Recorder has three different modes. You can try ADA Auto recording mode first. When you use it, you just need to play your stream and it will be captured automatically. Replay AV (former Replay Radio) has two ways of recording: recording from your sound card and stream capturing. So you can try the latter. I don't really use HiDownload, but another download manager called NetTransport is very good at recording both audio and video streams from BBC. Why don't I recommend BBC Radio Ripper? Because it has too few features for the price it has. As for the low rating, it is that low 'coz BBC Radio Ripper supports Real Audio streams only and in the rating I try to reflect the amount of different stream formats that audio stream ripper can handle. |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper? My deepest thanks for your prompt and considered reply at such a busy time of year to my observations regarding the recording of BBC Radio.
For me, WM Recorder does succeed in capturing the stream url, as you say, but then fails to make any recording even after the record button is pressed and the various options explored. NetTransport also fails. Upon hearing that apparently you are succeeding with these programs, and seeing that WM failed to detect Real Player in my computer when I selected the "Reset Settings" option, I have begun to wonder whether the problem may be that I use Media Payer Classic with its Real plug-in rather than the offical Real Player for streamed radio. It works very well, and avoid's Real's barrage of advertising, etc, but perhaps WM and the others fail to detect it. If this is the problem, and anyone knows of a way round, I'd like to hear of it: otherwise, I'll try re-installing Real Player in the new year. BBC Radio Ripper does seem to cope with Real Alternative, though. I was interested in the Replay Radio streaming option, which I hadn't noticed when I had the program installed, or perhaps my version was too old. I will give that one another try too when I get a moment, and also look forward to experimenting with WM and television. Thanks again! |

Also please send me the URL where I can find such a problematic stream. Quote:
NetTransport definitely doesn't need Real Player or Real Alternative to record streaming Real Video/Audio/Media. WM Recorder works with Real Alternative, however it is recommended to have Real Player for better support. Also IMHO its recording ability depends on WinPCap properly installed (proper version + correct installation). And the developer of WM Recorder mentioned the following: Quote:

Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper? Thanks again for the very prompt reply. The Internet connection test says that the connection is ok and the URLs are being captured: WM is working well for You-Tube, for instance.
An example of a URL is: Code:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain/saturday/rams/1200.ram Auto-record is on, and the firewall is allowing WM. The options "Include ram, smil" are checked in Media Options, but as stated I have Real Alternative rather than Real Player 10. I believe that WinPCap is properly installed, but I don't know what IMHO means! I would assume that these URLs don't accept downloads, only if BBC Ripper can get them, presumably they do! If any of the BBC7 Code:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?I have the same problem with WM Recorder. I don't really know how to solve it. May be I just need to reboot my computer. I have contacted the developer already.
However I had no any problem with two other stream recorders I have tried: Replay AV captured rtsp:// .ra link without any problem and I was able to save the stream to hd successfully. NetTransport works differently: it can process .ram metafile and start downloading from the URL immediately. The stream was also saved to hd successfully. |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?I am interested to hear of your success with Replay AV and NetTransport: I haven't been able to use the computer much in recent weeks due to a Trojan attack which prevented booting and to my having to be away from home to care for my mother, but today I've tried them both with Real Player 10.5 installed (I have Windows 2000 so 11 is not an option) and still found them both unable to save any BBC Real audio streaming links, even if I open the metafile.
I'm going to install a new hard drive soon with a fresh install of the operating system, but for some strange reason it seems that BBC Radio Ripper has to be the one for me! |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?I just repeated the experiment. I pasted
Code:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain/saturday/rams/1200.ram I also launched the URL Finder of Replay AV before starting to download with NetTransport. The Replay AV found the RTSP stream URL successfully and I had no any problem recording from it. Please copy the log of the download of NetTransport and PM it to me so that I can tell you more. You can also PM the log of Replay AV. Please also be more specific when describing your problem. Can you find the URL with Replay AV? What kind of error message do you see when trying to capture stream? The only problem I can think of is that your firewall blocks some applications. |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?Interesting: thank you for your time.
I have just tried with this url to which I am currently listening: Code:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain/friday/rams/0800.ram The Net Transport log reads: Code:
18/01/2008 22:13:08.296 Connecting to rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554 Code:
Recording log for All Shows |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper? You use old version of Replay AV. Please download the latest one and try again.
But NetTransport shows timeout after trying to connect. So there must be some problem with rtsp or ports. Real Player can automatically change ports and protocols. You can try to change ports and protocols manually. But it is easier to find the stream URL that Real Player uses with the URL Finder of Replay AV or with freeware URL Snooper. After finding stream URL, try to record from it. You shouldn't have any problem. |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?Hallo again!
I am using ReplayAV8, as per your link and the Applian web-site, so I think it's the most up to date version. I have downloaded and tried URL Snooper as you suggest, but it only gives the same rtsp url as I get by opening the ram file in Notepad, or which NetTransport can detect. As I say, even by inputting the rtsp url directly none of the programs I have tried download the streamed files apart from BBC Ripper and R7, but I only get a reasonable rendition with R7 if I make an avi file, and then there are always the problems with ram. Incidentally, I have just come across another stream recorder, SoundTap, which forms part of the Australian NCH Software Suite. I have tried it, but so far again with no result. Are the BBC rtsp streams protected from downloading? I have heard something to that effect. I wonder if your programs somehow avoid this by connecting through a proxy, as I don't use one: could this be the difference? Otherwise, I am well and truly baffled. |

Make sure it looks like the following one: Code:
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/bbc7/0800_fri.ra?BBC-UID=243719618206e2f91991208980009fa5f880b399309090238b9a4cc88bb5bd09_n&SSO2-UID= Also please let me know what stream URLs you can find when recording with BBC Radio Ripper. It is interesting what kind of protocol (http://, rtsp:// or pnm://) and what port number it uses (554, 7070, 8080, 80). It might be easier to find stream URLs with the URL Finder of Replay AV, 'coz URL Snooper usually gives much more links than you really need. Quote:

Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper? It seems that something has changed at the BBC's end.
I have been using Replay AV to successfully rip BBC Radio 1 and 4 streams for over a year, and a month or so ago (perhaps a little more), it stopped working. It will still connect to the URL (as per the example from "Stream Recorder") and play it, but won't rip (download) it. I've tried various other programs since (BBC Radio Ripper, HiDownload, etc.) and they all exhibit the same behaviour - they locate the rtsp stream with no problem and play it fine, but cannot rip (download it). I've also used URL Snooper to double check the stream URL, and it comes back with the same ones as I am using. The only possibility at the moment seems to be to capture the audio in real time, which is obviously what this type of software was designed to avoid. The programs themselves are still working fine, as I have tested them all with other streams (Virgin Media and XFM in the UK) and they rip as expected - it's only the BBC ones which no longer work. If anybody has any suggestions then I'd be interested, but for now it seems that ripping BBC rtsp streams isn't possible for me. |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?cjedj, please let me know what OS you use, what versions of Replay AV and other media stream recorders you tried...
And please also send me a couple of stream URLs you have problem with. |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?Quote:
The box I rip with is Win XP (SP2), Replay AV is 8.41, BBC Radio Ripper 2.9.7 trial version (downloaded yesterday as a test). That's all that's on my system ATM, I uninstalled HiDownload and one other a couple of months back. Replay AV has always been rock solid for me until a couple of months back. None of the BBC streams which take the following format work for me: Code:
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio1/moyles_mon.ra Code:
Sun Dec 9 2:31:05 PM Download capture type: Stream Capture Code:
Failure in starting the process! result code: -62. One thing I can't find anywhere is confirmation that anyone else can successfully download BBC streams at the moment - are you able to, and if so could you do me a favour and let me know which streams and which software you have success with? |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?Tried NetTransport with the first stream:
Code:
31.01.2008 12:09:08.890 Connecting to rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554 Code:
Thu Jan 31 12:10:42 PM Download capture type: Stream Capture The only thing I can think of is that you have port 554 closed. Make sure your firewall allows such connections. |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?554 is definitely open in both firewall and router, have just been back to double check.
I'm out of ideas, unless it has something to do with me having a non-UK IP address, but that seems unlikely, as I can play the streams with no issue. Looks like I'm going to have to stick to recording it for now. It's not the end of the world, but it's far less convenient. |

Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?Hi guys,
I found this thread through Google as I couldn't get WM Recorder to work with BBC audio streams either. It might interest you to know that I too was using Real Alternative and when I uninstalled this and installed Realplayer (god help me), WM Recorder started working perfectly capturing anything I launched with the BBC iPlayer. I'm not in the UK and maybe it's some combination of this and not using Realplayer which caused the issue. Hope this helps someone. Joe |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?I've always used "StreamBox VCR Suite" and never had a problem when giving the address in the format : rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radiox/aaaaaa_day.ra
eg rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio5/mayo_tue.ra rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio1/moyles_mon.ra There is also a "turbo" version which downloads considerably quicker than real-time... :D I hope this tip helps someone ? FYI - I am UK resident, I don't know how much this affects things... |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?I was interested to hear of your success with Streambox VCR Suite, so I reinstalled it from your link, but alas, still to no avail. The firewall was set to grant access and the RTSP stream was detected, but not downloaded.
I am in the UK (London) and connect through a router (and now also a hub) via Blueyonder (now Virgin) cable. The router has also been configured to use a DNS server, but I don't really see that this matters, as I am getting BBC audio (mostly BBC7) via Real Alternative. I have tried replacing this with ther proper Real Player in the past, but that didn't work for stream recording either! The only success I had with most of the suggested programs (Replay, Net Transport and other downloaders) was with BBC Ripper in the past, but no longer. R7 did grab some content, but just snatches at the wrong speed. So it's still recording through the sound card and trusty Sound Forge for the moment, then... |
Re: BBC radio recording - Why don't you recommend BBC Radio Ripper?I also use Real Alternative... I'm connected via BT ADSL (2Mb)... I also use a router but the DNS is set automatically from the ISP (usually the default).
That's the only thing I can think is really different... whats the full story with this DNS server things ? are you using a local (caching) DNS ? using an "open" public DNS ? |
Problem recording BBC Radio 1 (UK) [capturing/downloading RTSP .ra audio streams]Hi!
I'm having trouble recording BBC Radio 1 (UK), live or listen again (on-demand). I used to be able to! Please help! |
Re: Problem recording BBC Radio 1 (UK) [capturing/downloading RTSP .ra audio streams]Quote:
You may also use any media stream recorder or audio stream ripper. And of course direct sound recording software can be used to record anything produced by your sound card (with some quality loss). |
