Problems removing DRM from Kindle Store AZW and MOBI ebooks using Calibre plug-in

My version of Calibre has 14 files in it. I tried Adding a file & got This is not a valid plug-in path. I tried enabling the file & get Index Error.List of index out of range. I don't have the most recent version of Calibre. Could this be the problem? Help :O

Re: The simplest option for removing DRM: Calibre Plugins

Actually, now the problem is I can't get Calibre to add those 5 plug-in zip files. I click on the file, it appears in the Add Plug-ins box but when I click Add nothing happens :( What am I doing wrong?

Read the readme files in the Calibre_Plugins folder:

Please note: Calibre does not provide any immediate feedback to indicate that adding the plugin was a success. You can always click on the File-Type plugins to see if the plugin was added.

Thank you so much :D I finally figured it out & it worked great on a PDF book I had. My problem is I barely understand how to use Calibre, so looking in the File-Type plug ins folder never occurred to me:o

I’m also having trouble like some of the above folks deDRM’ing but in this case it’s a book that was free from Amazon. It’s Steve Pressfield’s “Do the work”
so might be a good one to debug with (since it’s free AND a good book to boot)

I’m using Calibre 7.56 and trying to get this converted to an EPUB to put on my Nook. (Seth Godin as great as he is has hitched his wagon to Amazon for publishing so your stuck with Kindle files – not good if you’re a Nook owner).

I’m using the K4PC plug-in version 2.8 from Alf’s site. I don’t know the PID for the book so I can’t enter that into the “customize plugin” which is why (i suspect) that it isn’t decrypting the book.

I tried Calibre 7.52 with K4PC plug-in version 2.7 and it worked just fine for me (I don't have a Nook, but I was able to convert to epub without any problem).

You don't need to customize the Calibre plugin if you add books from K4PC. You need to customize it only if you add your books from a Kindle.

Re: Problems removing DRM from Kindle Store AZW and MOBI ebooks using Calibre plug-in

That's what I thought after reading through all the various posts (as well as the readme's in the zip.
Could it be a Windows 7 issue?

As an alternate I tried running the standalone python script - unswindle.pyw but it seems to not be able to see that Kindle for PC is installed. Looking at the code it's looking for a registry key that I manually searched for and couldn't find.

Am going to try this from home computer as well which is also Windows 7 but on a private network. Also I think the windows 7 laptop i was trying it on at work is enterprise edition and may have the registry mucked up.
but if i read that right you were able to dedrm that book? could i pm you a place to drop it for me while i work out the calibre plugin?

Jim

I use Windows 7 64-bit.

Try to re-install K4PC (and may be install some of the older versions instead of the latest one). If it doesn't help, try to use other tools from the DRM tools package

That did it. Thanks. Got an older version of K4PC and no problems.

Kindle DRM removal using calibre plugins

I downloaded and installed Tools 3.8a which contains latest calibre plugins for Kindle Mobi and Kindle K4PC. Received error from calibre on DRM removal importing AZW files, but after converting AZW to MOBI format, removing the MOBI from calibre and re-importing the MOBI files, calibre imported the MOBI files without any error-removing the DRM from the MOBI. Are AZW files supposed to be able to have DRM removed using calibre plugins? Also exactly what is a PID?
