PLEASE Can someone please help me install this on Windows 7 Home Premium??? I will be immensely grateful! I keep getting the message the "PROGRAM COMPATIBILITY ASSISTANT" window that says "This Program is Blocked Due to Compatibility Issues" and I have already disabled the Program Compatibility Assistant Service under Services.

Also Dude111 why do you prefer WMP 9 to WMP 10? What went missing in WMP 10?

I guess you might have to accept an alternative as I did. I am advanced enough with this sort of thing that I rewrote code for video drivers I wanted to customise but I was NEVER able to get WMP10 even close to installed in Win7.
You have two options that I can see (besides continuing to fight with it ;) ):
Find a direct download of Virtual XP that will install in home premium and run WMP10 through the virtual machine.
I did this with WMP10 accessing files on the host machine's (Win7) drive and it worked ok with my machine.
By then I had gotten used to MediaMonkey though and opted to pay the $20 to get mp3 ripping capabilities in MediaMonkey. Which is my option 2, btw.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ;)
All the best getting used to Win7. Try classicshell and hunt around the windowsseven forums for ways to make it less dumb.

ok guys, i had to format my pc and reinstall win7 ultimate 32bit. i followed the steps again as mentioned by "leandrini"on page 3...

and got it installed the first time around, i wish i could help you guys who cant get it installed, teamviewer comes to mind ?????

ok guys i will explain exactly what i did.... follow these steps exactly.... then follow mine @ bottom.....

   *B. Navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Application Compatibility. Then on the left side under "Setting" double click on "Turn off Compatibility Assistant".
   *C. Click on "Enabled", then click the "Apply" button and the "OK" button.
   *D. Close the Local Group Policy Editor.
8. Run regedit and delete the "Installed Versions" in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ MediaPlayer \ Setup

The next step is what i did........
I restarted in "safemode", browsed to local disc c, open program files, locate windows media player folder, open it and click and install on "wmplayer.exe" just click next untill done. Restart your system and it should work, i really cant see a reason it shouldn't, i have done it twice...... good luck

i might be wrong here, but please try to scan your system with malwarebytes & superantispyware, both are free software, some of those file are fake, if i am right there must only 1 be running ???

not sure if wmp10 is the cause of this process, i have win7 ultimate installed and don't have that issue, so its hard to say that's the problem is wmp10, i think it's spyware or viruses.... try it and let us know

oh before i forget, you can also try to do the following:

open "run" type in msconfig, press enter
go to stratup and remove all ticks except your anti-virus prog
restart and see if the processes are still there

I have got several netbooks,2 are Windows XP and my others are Windows 7. And I have tried many times to install both Windows Media player 9 and 10 on my Windows 7.

But there is just no way I can do it. Because what happens is this-I download WMP 9 or WMP 10 from the web( I downloaded from old apps.com or old version.com.)My web browser saves the installer file in downloads on my computer. But when I try to install WMP 9 I get a message saying,program blocked due to compatibility issues. And when I try to install WMP 10 I get a message saying, sorry Windows Media player 10 is only for Windows XP.

And I also tried uploading the WMP 9 and WMP10 program files from my Windows XP netbook onto Mediafire. And then installing them from there on my Windows 7 laptop. But when I try to open either the WMP 9 or 10 program file,I get the same message as before.

So there is no way Windows will let you install or run WMP 9 or 10 on Windows 7. As it has blocked both the whole installation and the program. So WMP 9 and 10 only run on Windows XP I have found. But I cannot install or run WMP 9 or 10 on my Windows 7.

The lowest version of WMP you can run on Windows 7 is WMP 11 for Windows 7. But that is only because some one created an adapted version of WMP11 adapted for Windows 7. Maybe they will also make a WMP 9 or 10 for Windows 7, like they did with WMP 11 for windows 7.

But I recently saw a You Tube video and it showed WMP 9 installed and running on Windows 7,with the help of a software called Resource Hacker. But the video was not in English,so I could not understand it. And I don't know how they got WMP 9 running. As I cannot even get past the installation as Windows blocks the download on Windows 7. So I cannot even install WMP 9 or 10 on Windows 7. Andrea Borman.

I'm going a bit bonkers. Every time I try to play a CD or watch a DVD on my WinXP system in Windows Media Player, the sound fades out and I'm left without any audio track. I've tried jiggling my speaker cables, reseating my sound card, restarting Windows Media Player (or even my PC), and even sacrificing an old Abba CD to the Microsoft Gods, but nothing helps. How do I fix this sort of sound device problems?

What version of WMP have you got in Windows XP,WMP 9,10 or 11?

You should be able to find out what version you have got by opening WMP and clicking on help, and where it says about WMP.

But I have found on all versions of WMP, even on WMP 12 on Windows 7, that it does not play all formats. Even WMP 12 won't play FLV or MPG3 files. And none of the codecs I have installed work with any version of Windows Media Player.

WMP is all right for playing AVI and WMV files including video files recorded with desktop web cam software. But it does not play some other formats.

So it is a good idea to install another media player,such as VLC Player or Gom Player. As these media players will play any video or audio format. And you can run Gom Player,VLC or another player of your choice alongside Windows Media Player.

If you have got Windows XP there is also an earlier version of WMP,WMP 6.4,mplayer 2. And also WMP 5.1,mplayer 32. As well as your latest version of Windows Media Player,WMP 9,10 or 11.

But these 2 earlier versions do not play advanced formats either. So you could try the other 2 players I mentioned. They should work. Andrea Borman.

As far as I know, if your operating system is not original, windows takes down your account while you are installing windows media player. It happened to me some while ago when I was upgrading my windows media player :(

I didn't try this method and my win 7 is original so I can't test it...

Has anyone tried installing WMP9 on Windows 7 64 bit? I want WMP9 because the speed settings are always visible.

I can't stand WMP12. I have tried all of the other players I could find onthe Internet but none of them work as well as WMP when listening to streamingaudio via a slow Internet connection. All of the other players start, stop orshutter.

I would stick with WMP12 if you didn't have to jump through hoops to accessthe speed setting each time the player gets minimized.

I just installed WMP9 on Win7x64. I decompressed the installer exe and edited some files to get around the incompatibility issue. The install went just fine and WMP9 works for the most part but there is a problem with file associations. Even though WMP9 is the default program for all audio and video formats, Windows still asks which program should be used to open the files and when clicking on a link to a stream.

Also, there are no context menu items such as Play or Que it up.

I will install WMP10 and report back.

It is possible to install WMP 9 on Windows 7 but according to what I read you have to hack the installer files with Resource Hacker. I saw this video on You Tube and several others where some people managed to get WMP 9 working on Windows 7. But it is a complicated process and it did not work for me. I think you would have to do the same thing for WMP 10. And I have not been able to install either on Windows 7, not even by copying the WMP 9 and WMP 10 program files from my Windows XP computer,no.

But I do however have WMP 11 on both my Windows 7 and Windows 8. But it is WMP 11 for Windows 7 which is version of WMP 11 that someone made adapted to run on Windows 7. I found out about it from here-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40OJ4Gtvvnk

I've installed WMP9-11 on Win7 x64 and none of them, including WMP11, are fully functional.

They have issues with file associations and the context menu.

If you used the installer from WinMatrix and it worked for you that means you have Win7 x86. It won't work on x64. They do have a tutorial for x64 but it has the issues I mentioned previously.

Yes I have Windows 7 32 bit not 64 bit. And I also have Windows 8 Consumer Preview 32 bit. And WMP 11 for Windows 7 works on Windows 7 32bit and Windows 8 32 bit.

Also WMP 5.1,Mplay32 from Windows XP also works on Windows 7,Windows 8 and Windows Vista. You just copy the Mplay32 exe from Windows System32 on Windows XP onto Windows 7,Windows 8 and Windows Vista. Then place the Mplay32 file in Windows/System32 on Windows 7,Windows 8 and Windows Vista.

So as well as having WMP11 which is working on Windows 7 and Windows 8,I also have WMP 5.1 or Mplay32, as it is called on Windows 7 and Windows 8. And also on Windows Vista. And it runs alongside WMP on all 3 versions of Windows, the same way it does on Windows XP.

So WMP 5.1,Mplay32 from Windows XP also works on Windows 7,Windows Vista and Windows 8. But WMP 6.4,Mplayer 2 from Windows XP,however does not. WMP 6.4 only works on Windows XP.

I never buy 64 bit Windows 7 as I think it is slow and it is also not compatible with 32 bit Windows XP software. If you did a custom install of Windows 7 from the full install CD you should also have the 32 bit Windows 7 CD.

Could you not install the 32bit version of Windows 7? That would be better for you if you want to install and run your software from Windows XP and Windows Vista.As most Windows XP and Vista operating systems are 32 bit. Andrea Borman.

I have both 32bit and 64bit installs.

In all of my testing, Win7 x64 is not slower than x86 and it's actually faster with 64bit software. I am also able to run all of my old apps on Win7x64 without any problems whatsoever.

I've wasted many hours on trying to get this to work. I'll try one more time and see if I can figure out the reg edits that are needed to make WMP11x64 the default player.

Jeffshead,So if you have got 32 bit Windows 7,why not just install WMP11 for Windows 7 like I have done. That definitely works on Windows 7 and Windows 8.

According to the You Tube Videos I have seen and other posts I have read on the web. It is also possible to run WMP 9 on windows 7 but it involves a hack with the WMP 9 installer files. You could possibly run even earlier versions of WMP this way,WMP 7 but I don't know how you would do it. Andrea Borman.

The particular computer I want WMP11 has Win7x64 and is fully loaded with all of my apps and settings so I do not want to reinstall everything just for WMP11.

What happens when you browse to and highlight one or more audio files, select "Add to Windows Media Player List" from the right click context menu?

It does not work for me with Win7 x64 WMP11. Does it work for you on Win7 x86?

Jeffshead, WMP 11 is working for me on both Windows 7 and Windows 8. It plays videos and audio files. And I have just had a look at WMP11 on my Windows 8 and yes I can create play lists and add music to it.

Also the only thing that is not working for me is the WMP 11 taskbar toolbar. Even though the WMP toolbar option is listed in taskbar Properties.When I minimised the player it still plays if I have WMP toolbar ticked but does not displayer the taskbar toolbar.

But that is to do with Windows 7 and Windows 8, as that features is not included in Windows 7 or 8.Also when I play audio files they all play well but I don't get the colored visual effects you get on WMP 9. But you don't get that on WMP11 on Windows Vista either, just a plain black screen and the audio music.

So yes WMP11 is working on Windows 7 and 8 the same as any other media player. And the skin chooser mode is also working.

But the only one you can install is WMP 11 for Windows 7. When I copied the WMP 11 program file from Windows Vista onto Windows 7 it did not work. And if you try to download WMP11 from the Microsoft website it won't let you install it.

So the one from WinMatrix has been adapted to install and run on Windows 7 and also works on Windows 8. But the official Microsoft version won't install on Windows 7.

I don't understand why, if they were able to make a WMP 11 for Windows 7, which works,they don't just make a WMP9 or 10 for Windows 7. That would solve the problem.

But if you look at that You Tube video again it says you have to turn off WMP,Windows Media Centre and Media features in turn off Windows features.

And when you install WMP 11 you click restart later.Then delete the registry key "installed versions" in Media Player set up. Then restart your computer.

And if you want to go back to WMP 12 you just turn it on again in Windows features and WMP 11 will be upgraded to WMP 12. But you can go back to WMP 11 anytime by going though the whole installation process again.

And also WMP 5.1,Mplay32 from Windows XP works on Windows 7,Windows Vista and Windows 8. But that is actually called Media Player. And is the very first version of WMP they made.Included in Windows XP and Windows 2000,98,and 95 and NT. But not included in Windows Vista and after that.

And what issues does it have.

The only reason I want it is because of the Album Art not being displayed in its original size.

I dont know how I did it, but somehow I added music to the WMP12 and it showed the Album Art in the original size. I didnt do any registry hacks or anything. All I recall was that I had both my iTunes and WMP music folder in the same location. Ive been doing system recoveries to try and figure it out. It worked once and I have no clue what I did for it to work.

Any help is appreciated.

Well as I said in an earlier post only WMP 11 works on Windows 7. I cannot install or get WMP 9 or 10 working on anything but Windows XP.

But I find that both WMP 11 and 12 falls short of the features in WMP9. The taskbar toolbar of WMP 11 does not work on Windows 7 and there are no visualisations in WMP 11. Not even on Windows Vista.

So I have installed Winamp media player which works on all versions of Windows,including Windows 8. Winamp has lots of visualisations that are very much like WMP9 and all of them are working. Also Winamp has a plug in called Tray Control which gives you the taskbar toolbar like WMP does.

So Winamp is an option if you are looking for visualisations and the taskbar toolbar not in WMP 11 or 12. Winamp also has lots of plug ins that you can add to it. It does not play all video files but is a good audio player. And a lot of the features of Winamp are similar to WMP 9 and 10. Andrea Borman.

Hello, sorry to disrupt this age-old thread. But I am trying to get this to work and it won't.

Everything was fine up until I faced deleting "Installed Versions" in the registry directory, it wasn't there.

Anyway, I followed through regardless but now I am facing this error each time I try it:



I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, can someone please tell me what I've done wrong?

I remember wasting countless hours searching the Internet, editing the installation files I found and the registry to get this crude hack to somewhat work.

I was never able to get WMP9-11 to work flawlessly. There was always a missing feature or issue with every version.

Sorry this is not the answer you are looking for but I'm trying to save you countless hours and frustration. I suggest you get used to WMP12, use a VM of Windows XP or use another player because the end result will be a lot of time spent getting an outdated player installed that has missing features and/or issues.

I can get any other Media Player to work flawlessly, it's just 10 that isn't working. I don't care if it has some flaws, just as long as I can use it to listen to things.

Hi guys,

1) I was able to install WMP 10 on Windows 7 32 bit, following the instructions posted by Leandrini. At the end, everything worked fine and I had WMP 10 running in Windows 7 32 bit with no issues! :)

2) I was not able to install WMP 10 on Windows 7 64 bit, following the same instructions. At the end, like user Mew, I was not able to find "installed versions" on the registry, and got the same error message he did.

So, it seems you can install WMP 10 on Windows 7 32 bit, but you can not install WMP 10 on Windows 7 64 bit!

Fortunately, just before trying to change WMP version on my Windows 7 64 bit, I had done a complete partition backup (I use Macrium Reflect to do it). So, when I ended with not WMP at all, I just recovered the partition backup I had made less than an hour before, and at I got my Windows exactly as before changes, and ended with my WMP 12 again.

* Some people ask why we insist on WMP 10 instead of other media players. Well, for me there is a very good reason. I have a hearing loss (in my case, it affects the frequencies above 2 kHz). In 2004 a guy made a customized DSP dll file for me, with performs a very advanced compressive equalization that makes music sound again vivid to my ears. With WMP 10 I could just go to "plugins", "DSP plugins", click in the "add plugin" button, point to the dll location, and get it working. In WMP 11 and 12, Microsoft removed the option of adding a DSP plugin directly from a dll file in the computer. And that specific dll does not work in other players, just in WMP. So in order to be able to having pleasure listen to music with my hearing problem, I think I will change Windows 7 64 bit for Windows 7 32 bit... better to have that Windows 32 bit RAM memory limit (4 GB) than not being able to listen properly to my favorite music!

How to fix if WMP 10 in Windows 7 is not able to play MP4 and some other video files.

Even after installing K-Lite Codec Pack, my Windows Media Player was not playing some of the video files I have. It did not play any mp4 files, and did not play some mpeg and avi files.

Here how to fix this:
1) In K-Lite Codec Pack program group, find and run "Codec Tweak Tool".
2) Click the button "MS Codec Tweaks"
3) Check the first option ("Disable Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder").

And that's it! After disabling Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder, all my video files play perfectly in my WMP10 under Windows 7 32 bit.
