The only way I have found to do this is to use Camtasia Studio. Works like a charm, and allows me to save in any video format I choose with all the quality maintained.

Even free Screen video capture software can do the job, but it is always nice to have original files because of the size and quality.

Even some freeware screen video capture programs can record video with sound.

If you don't have the stereo mix option and can't record because of that, please read the following thread:
Missing sound recording option "Stereo Mix" / "Record What you hear" / "Waveout mix"

You can also record from screen with Replay Video Capture and WM Capture. Both programs use a universal audio driver, so they don't need the "Stereo Mix" / "Record What you hear" / "Waveout mix" to record audio from your sound card.

Thanks--I used Camtasia, and it does work. You can get a free 30 day trial, but the software is pricey if you actually want to buy it. The way it works is that it records everything that's happening on your computer screen--it doesn't actually try to download the file. So it works even on VTC, which seems to be able to prevent all the other normal routes (FDM, or example, or various Firefox plugins).
