What is possible and what is not possible

I will try to be brief and accurate.
I am a mechanic not a tech guy.

I want to stream from a camcorder through my pc straight to my server with jwplayer on the site.

My goal is to have more than a thousand active viewers at once viewing the video stream.

Do I really have to go through a cdn like wowza , dacast ect, to achieve this.

The calcs from these people estimate a monthly payment of nearing 3500.00 a month for bandwidth.

A dedicated server with some sort of software such as videowhisper,
red5, nginx, wowza streaming engine ect. would not achieve the goal of being self dependent
and spend that money on my own server bandwidth instead.

Can this be done.

Or am I way off here and not understanding the nature of the beast.

What are the options for achieving my goal cheaply and reliably

Regards
