play stream in player without downloading/recording

playing steams in a player without downloading or recording. how is it done? players like vlc smplayer mplayer even some kind of brand new stream rtmp player anything is fine. specifically rtmp off streaming sites. trying Replay Media Catcher 4 and it plays the video fine for a while but its really just playing the currently recording flv file and after a minute or so it reaches the end of the flv file because its playing faster than its making the file and it shuts off and you start again and it starts at the beginning so you're minutes behind. so how to play a stream rtmp in a player without downloading or recording?

i have been searching everywhere for a long time so even redirection to something that answers this specific question is fine. also tried rtmpdump but can't seem to get the right command to get it to work right. on windows xp sp2.

Re: play stream in player without downloading/recording

rtmpdump can be used for watching RTMP streams in VLC and MPlayer.

How to watch RTMP/RTMPE streaming in MPlayer using rtmpdump
How to watch RTMP stream in VLC using rtmpdump

Also the latest version of MPlayer uses the same librtmp library as rtmpdump.

are you saying you can play rtmp links inside mplayer? using "MPlayer SVN Windows with SMPlayer GUI"? just redownloaded and reinstalled mplayer 0.6.9 again to be sure and opened the url and smplayer keeps trying to play the rtmp link and failing. i'll keep trying smplayer along with vlc then. again player doesn't matter it was just recommended alot

and sorry your links are dead ends and don't work and i think its because its not specific to ustream. again i don't want to download. i just want to play it in a player without downloading. and again even if playing while downloading its not stable and after playing for about a minute it stops. so i hope there is a simple gui program that can just play rtmp by not adding a save as the only option some day. thanks

rtmp streams are more complicated than you may think of them. Sometime it is enough just to find an rtmp:// URL properly(!), but in many cases you will need to specify additional parameters.

What exactly doesn't work?

There is plenty of information in the forum about downloading and watching streams:

If you know how to download with rtmpdump, you should be able to watch with VLC and MPlayer.
