ffmpeg: what are its limitations?

My question is what is the limitation of ffmpeg as far as what stream type it can and can't record? i see that it can record nbcolympics and seems to be the only one able to do so. So I am just wondering is it actually the most capable, even though it might be the most cumbersome interface?

Btw, how do you just record a youtube vid using ffmpeg? I know with nbcolympics you try to get the link with the index.m3u8 and feed that link into ffmpeg. But for youtube and other type of stream, what is the http link i should look for?

Fed the correct command, FFmpeg can pretty much stream/download from any website. However you rarely see it used because better tools are available. The reason you see it in current use it because it is possibly the only tool for Apple HLS streams (m3u8). So I would stick to that as it can be cumbersome for other streams.

YouTube is a big universe. Some streams are simple HTTP, some streams are Apple HLS, some streams are RTMPE. For a simple HTTP stream you can use my bookmarklet

I am getting clipping errors into the 30 or so minutes or video time and the stream file was useless. Much appreciate if you can tell what's wrong. Thanksl
