I used to record "stereo mix" of soundcard output on Windows.

Read a few tutorials about using the "arecord" command to do the same thing on Linux.

However, using the following command only gives me the microphone input:
Code:
arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D hw out.wav

which means, if I unplug the mic, I will hear nothing.

Is there a way to record the digital output or even back-end audio samples of the "stereo mix"?

So after messing with Windows 7 a LOT I believe I have found the way to fix the no audio problem so many of us are having. The issue seems to be that the default audio device in Windows gets changed from "what you hear" to something else. In my case, this was because I installed other devices that have sound capabilities. So at first Replay worked, and then it didn't. If it never worked for you, then you probably never had this setting in windows 7 right.

Here are the steps to fix:

Open "control panel"

click "hardware and sound"

click "manage audio devices"

click "recording tab"

you need to make "what you hear" the default device. If you dont see a green checkmark next to it. select it and click "set default"

In my case, this showed as "unavailable". In order to make it available, I needed to click on the device that WAS the default and turn it off. (in my case, "analog mix"). Select the device, click "properties", then at the drop down at the bottom, chose "dont use this device".

You should now see that "what you hear" is available. Assuming so, select it and chose "set default".

In my case, this fixed the problem.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

How to enable Stereo Mix in Windows 7(Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme & Realtek sound card)

For some time now I have been trying to use the old "stereo mix" or "what u hear" I had on my old PC with XP. I built a new rig, got a new sound card...

For some time now I have been trying to use the old "stereo mix" or "what u hear" I had on my old PC with XP. I built a new rig, got a new sound card and put Windows Seven on it but could not find Stereo Mix. So I started using an external audio cable to use "Line In" as my recording device and it works BUT when I'm recording and there is no audio there is a loud hissing sound and it makes it not worth while.

So after messing around for a while I found out that my sound card just does not have that option so this is what I did next and where I am stumped.

What I did:
-I went into the Device Manager and disabled my Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio, so

-Now I am running all my audio through the High Definition Audio Device (jacks are on my motherboard)

-I downloaded the latest Realtek HD Audio Drivers and installed them and all of my Hardware Id's for Playback/Recording now read
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_198B&SUBSYS_1043829B& REV_1004
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_198B&SUBSYS_1043829B

- And I rebooted, twice.

So at this point since I am not using my Sound Blaster anymore and I have the latest and greatest in HD Drivers, so why does "Stereo Mix" or similar not want to show up??

On recording devices I have 2 "Microphones" and "Line-In" but when I show Disabled/Disconnected devices the only other thing that comes up is "CD Audio". CD Audio does not work like Stereo Mix I already tried it.

I even tried to find a bunch of different registry value to enable (from YouTube tutorials) but I just don't have them because it might just be a Dell thing. Anyways they were:
DigitalStereoMix
DigitalInputMonitor
EnableInputMonitor

So I am completely stumped. I can only think of one solution and that would be shelling out $100+ for a card that has Stereo Mix, but I'd rather not do that since so many people seem to have it with just the Windows HD Audio Device Driver.

Thank you for reading, and any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated because I'm all out!!

I have Dell Optiplex 740 and I want to record (video + audio) the games that i play on my system. And i don't get the audio as there is NO Stereo Mix option in the software driver provided.

It has SigmaTel Audio Driver. I am working on XP Professional OS.

I tried my best but could not find any solution.

I installed an LG driver for Sigmatel Audio Card suggested in another forum (downloaded from http://uk.lge.com/support/download_soft.jsp )
but it didn’t work as it showed some errors and the driver couldn't be installed may be because the drivers were for laptop and might be having some incompatibility problem with that.

I tried Virtual Audio Cable also. It was quite successful with small audio capturing but when I tried to capture some program for 45 minutes it resulted in audio flickers and misses at a lot of place.

Kindly help.

I am a frequent listener to BBC's Radio 7. Previously, I would go to a desired broadcast on their Listen Again page, click the link, right-click the Listen button, save the link to my Desktop, open the link as a text file, copy the link to the Real Audio file, paste it into Streambox VCR, and in a few seconds, I have an .ra file I can convert to mp3.
The problem is that, apparently, BBC is phasing out use of Real Audio in favor of AAC, and Streambox won't recognize AAC.
