The "AACS" Digital Rights Management system on all Blu-Ray discs attempts to stop consumers from exercising fair use rights, including:
  • Playing films using standard digital (DVI) or analog (VGA) cables and monitors, which generally do not support HDCP encryption, without a 75% reduction in resolution.
  • Playing purchased Blu-Ray movies using open source software.
  • Fast forwarding or skipping advertisements.
  • Playing imported films, including when local equivalents may be overpriced or not available.

Blu-Ray player applications require their unique player (or "device") key to play discs. These keys are issued by AACS-LA to approved manufacturers that implement the restrictions mentioned above. This player key can decrypt volume key of each movie, which in turn can decrypt the content of the movie to play it.

However the AACS DRM is ineffective and does not successfully prevent any of these things, because:
  • Player keys for all Windows based software players, such as PowerDVD are known publicly. These can be used to find the volume keys for discs that don't have newer keys than those discovered. While these applications now have new keys (and future HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs won't play with the old keys), it's likely the new key will be discovered too as all players must store their keys in memory at some point.
  • The volume keys needed to play many released movies are known publicly. Even without a licensed player key, Linux HD-DVD and Blu-Ray software can use these to play discs.

For Ubuntu 9.x you will need MPlayer and FFMPEG. Ubuntu 9.10 contains a version of Mplayer that is capable of reading decrypted Blu-ray files.

Many Blu-Ray discs use DRM protection. To decrypt such discs you can use DumpHD. You will also need a current keydb.cfg file, which contains the decryption keys required to your movie.

If DumpHD cannot rip your disc, you can try the MakeMKV. This program contains a decryption key that has not been revoked, and may have more success in ripping your disc. MakeMKV is not as advanced at removing the BD+ protection on certain discs.

Please note that you will need up to 50GB of free hard disk space to store Blu-Ray video on your hd.
  1. To remove decryption from a Blu-Ray disc, insert it into your drive and run DumpHD

    sudo ./dumphd.sh
  2. Select the disc as the source (a directory somewhere beneath "/media/Movie Name" and a directory like "/tmp" to save the movie content.
    You can proceed onto the next step once .m2ts has started decrypting.
  3. Play the the decrypted movie from your hard disk with mplayer, specifying the video codec:

  4. If you can't play the file, the disc might be protected with BD+. Try to remove BD+ first.

  • .m2ts files,
  • MPEG-2,
  • VC1,
  • MPEG-4 AVC

How to set up Media Player Classic to play Blu-Ray discs
Select View -> Options -> External filters
  1. Add filter "Haali Media Splitter (AR)", Set merit 00900000, Set Prefer
  2. Add Filter "ffdshow audio decoder", Set merit 00700000
  3. Add filter "cyberlink H.264/AVC Decoder", Set merit 00900400
  4. Add Filter "Sonic Cinemaster Audio Decoder 4.3.0", Set merit 00805000
  5. Add Filter "ffdshow video decoder", Set merit 00800000 (late fix to stop ffdshow taking over from cyberlink)
  6. Add Filter "Sonic Cinemaster Video Decoder", Set merit 00700000 (late fix to stop Cinemaster Video taking over from ffdshow video)
  7. * Add Filter "Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder (pdvd7), set merit "prefer" (Try this for some hardware acceleration in Windows XP)
  8. * Add Filter "Nvidia Video Decoder", Set merit "Prefer" (block cyberlink) (try this for hardware acceleration in Windows XP/Vista if you have Nvidia Purevideo)

Select View -> Options -> Internal filters
  • Deselect any mpeg, matroska from the source list
  • Deselect any AC3, mpeg from the transport filter list

How to set up Windows Media Player 11 to play Blu-Ray discs
  • Windows Media Player v11
  • cl264dec.ax (Video) (cyberlink H264/AVC Decoder from PowerDVD)
  • splitter.ax (Haali media splitter (AR) from Haali Matroska splitter)
  • cinemaster audio.dll (Audio)(Sonic Cinemaster Audio Decoder v 4.3 from Cineplayer Codec Pack)
  • ffdshow.ax (Audio)(ffdshow audio decoder from FFDshow)

Alternative method of playing Blu-Ray discs using Arcsoft filters from Arcsoft Totalmedia Extreme
Download and install the free version of Arcsoft Totalmedia Extreme and
  • Add filter "Arcsoft MPEG Demux", Set to "Prefer"
  • Add filter "Arcsoft Video Decoder", Set to "Prefer"
  • Add filter "Arcsoft Audio Decoder HD", Set to "Prefer"
  • BLOCK any other splitter/demuxers you already have in your external filter list

Now you can play Blu-Ray discs with Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player. Please note that this requires a lot of processor power.

Advantages of using Media Player Classic
  • Full resolution screen capture of the movie
  • You can zoom the movie to get rid of the black bars (numpad key 9)
  • You don't need an approved graphics card, almost any PCI-e card will work (Nvidia 7300 at 80% CPU)
  • You don't have to waste time with menus, trailers and adverts

Disadvantages of using Media Player Classic
  • Minimum processor Core2duo
  • No Dolby TrueHD tracks available using Haali splitter (You can Nero Audio Decoder 2 and Nero Splitter, but it requires the purchase of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray plug-in for Nero 7)
  • Not very good with AGP graphics cards

And for many years all worked perfectly.

But recently it seems as if the wax-files are not supported anymore by the Windows Mediaplayer. The wax-files on my PC and on my server can't be opened anymore. I tried everything, but in fact I didn't change anything neither. It worked perfectly for so many years.

What has happened? Has Microsoft change anything in the WMP? And if I can't use .wax files anymore, what is a good alternative, also for making clickable playlists for my visitors?
