What do you think about adding a wiki?

What do you think about adding a wiki?

It's the simplest way to reduce unnecessary duplication. There are about four ITV-related threads. We could use the wiki to accumulate the knowledge we gathered throughout discussions in the forum. Thus, it won't replace the forum but rather "complete" it.

The longer a thread becomes, the more difficult it becomes to follow. Sometimes there were pretty good hints within the first replies but generally you'd just read the last 1-2 pages (at least I do) to save time. I guess, many users do the same and thus, many questions are repeated over and over again. But if we have a central place to link to, it becomes much easier.

As a wiki software, I can recommend Dokuwiki.

What do you think?

Re: What do you think about adding a wiki?

I wanted to add a wiki long ago. The biggest problem is that it seems to be better to have single user sign up and login for both our wiki and our forum.

There are no mods that I know that work with Dokuwiki.

It is possible to use MediaWiki, but the forum script needs to be updated (not an easy thing to do since it has Zoints SEO, Zoints Tags, Anonymous user mods installed.

Another option is to use VaultWiki, but it is a commercial product. It could be easier for vBulletin users, but you never know how long it will be on the market.

New vBulletin 4 costs almost $200, vB CMS (which also has blogs and articles) is even more expensive. The good thing is that it is more secure and allows to fight with spam more effectively.

VaultWiki Premium costs $60

What Wiki do you think we should use?

If anybody is willing to make a donation, I will post a paypal account here. Thank you anyway.

I don't see a need for such integration. Why don't keep it separated?

As an alternative to vB, you could migrate to PunBB, IPB or phpBB as these are supported by DokuWiki. It's perfectly possible to write an own plugin for vB and judging from the available ones, it actually doesn't require much effort.

PunBB:

I don't really like PunBB and phpBB. IPB might be a good alternative, but it seems to be more complicated to migrate to it than to write a bridge for vB and DokuWiki. It seems to be pretty easy. Will try to make it.

Really? According to this thread, a migration seems to be very easy though.

It is very easy only when there are no additional mods like SEO and Tags. In this case a bridge seems to be an easier solution.

What do you think about using Google Wave instead of Wiki?

It's still beta and requires a Google account.

What's wrong with DokuWiki? In my opinion, there's no need to connect the forum with the wiki.

Not everybody who's registered here, is willing to contribute to the wiki. The others won't care to sign up in the wiki.
