How to disable / remove Windows Media Center in Vista

Windows Media Center (MCE) is a feature included in Windows Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate editions. However, not all users of Vista Ultimate or Home Premium need the Windows Media Center. The latter can't be uninstalled from the Control Panel (Uninstall Programs and Features). But the Windows Media Center services can be disabled so that it won’t run.

Open Services in the Control Panel (or launch a command line and type services.msc). Locate all services related to Windows Media Center:
  • Windows Media Center Extender Service,
  • Windows Media Center Receiver Service,
  • Windows Media Center Scheduler Service,
  • Windows Media Center Service Launcher
  • any other services starting with Windows Media Center and "eh".
Then set the Startup Type of all this services to "Disable". Please note that Windows Media Center won’t run even when WMC button is pressed or when you try to launch it from the Start Menu.
