The best screen capture software for Linux

Screen video capture software listed at all-streaming-media.com is for Windows mainly.

What is the best screen capture software for Linux? I need it to be able to record video with audio.

Re: The best screen capture software for Linux

I can't suggest you the best screen capture program for Linux, but I have some programs for you to try:
  • Vnc2swf (Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, and Windows) is a cross-platform screen recording tool for ShockWave Flash (swf) or Flash Video (flv) format.
  • xvidcap (Linux/BSD/UNIX-like OSes / open-source) - a small tool to capture things going on on an X-Windows display to either individual frames or an MPEG video.
  • recordMyDesktop (Linux / open-source) produces a file(default out.ogv) that contains a video and audio recording of a linux desktop session. The default behavior of recording is to mark areas that have changed(through libxdamage) and update the frame. This behavior can be changed (option --full-shots ) to produce a more accurate result or capture windows that do not generate events on change (windows with accelerated 3d context), but this will notably increase the workload.
recordMyDesktop doesn't have a commandline interface.
  • Istanbul (Linux) is a desktop session recorder for the Free Desktop. Istanbul allows to create screenshots and screencasts. It records your session into an Ogg Theora video file. To start the recording, you click on its icon in the notification area. To stop you click its icon again. It works on GNOME, KDE, XFCE and others.
  • cpsrecode, capseo and KWin
KWin in KDE 4 offers the possibility to record desktop. The resulting files have a .cps suffix (cps = capseo = video codec created by the same developer as the underlying library called captury.

    Record with cpsrecode
    Code:
    cpsrecode -i movie.cps -o - | mencoder - -o screen-capture.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=xvid:autoaspect=1
    Play cps files
    Code:
    cpsrecode -i movie.cps -o - | mplayer -
This binary is on Kubuntu part of the capseo package.

Everybody is happy that you work for the company. But this thread is not about software for Windows.

Re: The best screen capture software for Linux

SimpleScreenRecorder (LINUX)

Features
Graphical user interface (Qt-based).

Faster than VLC and ffmpeg/avconv.

Records the entire screen or part of it, or records OpenGL applications directly (similar to Fraps on Windows).

Synchronizes audio and video properly (a common issue with VLC and ffmpeg/avconv).

Reduces the video frame rate if your computer is too slow (rather than using up all your RAM like VLC does).

Fully multithreaded: small delays in any of the components will never block the other components, resulting is smoother video and better performance on computers with multiple processors.

Pause and resume recording at any time (either by clicking a button or by pressing a hotkey).

Shows statistics during recording (file size, bit rate, total recording time, actual frame rate, ...).

Can show a preview during recording, so you don't waste time recording something only to figure out afterwards that some setting was wrong.

Uses libav/ffmpeg libraries for encoding, so it supports many different codecs and file formats (adding more is trivial).

Can also do live streaming (experimental).

Sensible default settings: no need to change anything if you don't want to.

Tooltips for almost everything: no need to read the documentation to find out what something does.

SEETEC HDMI to USB3.0 capture.
The beauty of the capture is that it doesn't require any installation of drivers,
and will work with most software across Mac and PC.
Allowing you to stream to OBS, LYNC, Skype, Facebook Live, YouTube Live, and many more.

It is compatible with UVC video capture and YUV 422 video output. Support the software that based on DirectShow.
Support the video with Full HD resolution.
