Also please let me know what stream URLs you can find when recording with BBC Radio Ripper. It is interesting what kind of protocol (http://, rtsp:// or pnm://) and what port number it uses (554, 7070, 8080, 80).

It might be easier to find stream URLs with the URL Finder of Replay AV, 'coz URL Snooper usually gives much more links than you really need.

Soundtap just records from your sound card. There are lots of alternatives to it, some of them are free.

It seems that something has changed at the BBC's end.

I have been using Replay AV to successfully rip BBC Radio 1 and 4 streams for over a year, and a month or so ago (perhaps a little more), it stopped working. It will still connect to the URL (as per the example from "Stream Recorder") and play it, but won't rip (download) it.

I've tried various other programs since (BBC Radio Ripper, HiDownload, etc.) and they all exhibit the same behaviour - they locate the rtsp stream with no problem and play it fine, but cannot rip (download it). I've also used URL Snooper to double check the stream URL, and it comes back with the same ones as I am using.

The only possibility at the moment seems to be to capture the audio in real time, which is obviously what this type of software was designed to avoid.

The programs themselves are still working fine, as I have tested them all with other streams (Virgin Media and XFM in the UK) and they rip as expected - it's only the BBC ones which no longer work.

If anybody has any suggestions then I'd be interested, but for now it seems that ripping BBC rtsp streams isn't possible for me.

The box I rip with is Win XP (SP2), Replay AV is 8.41, BBC Radio Ripper 2.9.7 trial version (downloaded yesterday as a test). That's all that's on my system ATM, I uninstalled HiDownload and one other a couple of months back.

Replay AV has always been rock solid for me until a couple of months back.

None of the BBC streams which take the following format work for me:

rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio1/moyles_mon.ra
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio4/1310_sat.ra

These are with or without the BBC-UID appended, it doesn't change the result. Here's what happens with Replay AV (it's from last month, but this is the same every time I try it):

BBC Radio Ripper throws the error

Conversely, as I said in my last post, I have no problem with other radio networks, only BBC.

One thing I can't find anywhere is confirmation that anyone else can successfully download BBC streams at the moment - are you able to, and if so could you do me a favour and let me know which streams and which software you have success with?

Had no any problem recording... and playing the recordings.

The only thing I can think of is that you have port 554 closed. Make sure your firewall allows such connections.

554 is definitely open in both firewall and router, have just been back to double check.

I'm out of ideas, unless it has something to do with me having a non-UK IP address, but that seems unlikely, as I can play the streams with no issue.

Looks like I'm going to have to stick to recording it for now. It's not the end of the world, but it's far less convenient.

I don't reside in the UK either. It is really very weird if you can play the stream, but unable to record when trying to use the same URL that your real player uses....

Try to use a different port number:

Hi guys,

I found this thread through Google as I couldn't get WM Recorder to work with BBC audio streams either. It might interest you to know that I too was using Real Alternative and when I uninstalled this and installed Realplayer (god help me), WM Recorder started working perfectly capturing anything I launched with the BBC iPlayer.

I'm not in the UK and maybe it's some combination of this and not using Realplayer which caused the issue.

I've always used "StreamBox VCR Suite" and never had a problem when giving the address in the format : rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radiox/aaaaaa_day.ra

eg

There is also a "turbo" version which downloads considerably quicker than real-time...

I was interested to hear of your success with Streambox VCR Suite, so I reinstalled it from your link, but alas, still to no avail. The firewall was set to grant access and the RTSP stream was detected, but not downloaded.

I am in the UK (London) and connect through a router (and now also a hub) via Blueyonder (now Virgin) cable. The router has also been configured to use a DNS server, but I don't really see that this matters, as I am getting BBC audio (mostly BBC7) via Real Alternative. I have tried replacing this with ther proper Real Player in the past, but that didn't work for stream recording either! The only success I had with most of the suggested programs (Replay, Net Transport and other downloaders) was with BBC Ripper in the past, but no longer. R7 did grab some content, but just snatches at the wrong speed.

So it's still recording through the sound card and trusty Sound Forge for the moment, then...
