Hi and thanks for any help I might get. A few months ago I was forced to use the XP reinstall disk that came with my Dell, which wiped out everything on my hard drive. Caught off guard, I was unable to even copy down names of the software which I had collected over the last two years. Among the lost software was an app which I had used several times with great satisfaction. I've been going nuts trying to remember the name of this streaming media converter. It would allow me to watch a video on youtube or google video (and others) and save it to my hard drive. Now the problem. The name of this app was....'something...something....tube'. I have searched google endlessly, and looked at the extensive list on this website, but I don't see it listed anywhere. This was not commercial product, just a simple program that someone made and generously offered it online for free. I downloaded it a couple of years ago, and I seem to recall it might have been the only 'free' software available for capturing streaming video...at least the only one I could find. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, I would be eternally grateful. Like I said ... the app has the word 'tube' at the end....'yadda...yadda...tube'. TY!

To be honest, that does not ring a bell for me.
HOWEVER, you CAN record youtube videos for 100% FREE using Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm) 's demo mode. Keep in mind, the full version does cost $39 or so, BUT you can use the demo to record unlimited youtube videos.
Sorry I don't recal the name of that program, But I hope this is a viable alternative. :)

Hi, Thanks a lot for the reply and suggestion. I just looked at the Replay Media Catcher info, and it looks like it has all the features, and probably more, than the one I was trying to find. I'm sure my search for the forgotten program will come to an abrupt end if it works out. It's getting kind of late here, so I'm going to wait until tomorrow to try it out. I'll post here and let you know if all goes well. Once again, thanks very much for your help. Will E

Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm) can download youtube videos for free, rename them automatically, extract mp3 files for free and even convert recorded flv videos!!! Even though it is FREE, you get high quality technical support from Applian technologies. I don't see any better alternatives to that on the market!
And you can even learn how to use Replay Media Catcher using one of the many free video tutorials ;)

Hi and thanks again. I just finished installing Replay Media Catcher and watching the how-to video. It was an easy install, and the video instructions were quite simple. However, despite the claim that it copies 100% of Youtube videos, I tried to record a video from Youtube which is 2:06 long, but it only records around 90 seconds, then a little window opens saying that the demo version only records 75% and that I need to register to get the full version. Then when I go to the registration page, it says I have to purchase the full version for $39.99 to register! Undeterred, I watched the demo video again, just to see if I made a mistake. I repeated my attempt a second time. Same results. Am I doing something wrong ? Thanks again, Will E

Is this happening with ALL YouTube videos or a specific one? Can you give me a link to a video that you are unable to get 100% of so that I can test it? Thanks!

Nope, I only checked one video...twice. I didn't think to try any others, but this is the one that I wanted and was trying to remember the ..."yada..yada....tube" app for. Here's a link to the video from Youtube. Thanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFfuUu5xmMA

Ok I just found out that some YouTube videos no longer have youtube in the URL. So Media catcher doesn't "see" these as YouTube videos and only allows 75%. I talked to the developer about this and he is going to be working at getting a fix in place. It may take a little time so try to be patient!!

I'm happy to hear that a fix will be along, and now that I know what the problem was I'll look for youtube in the url before I download any more video's. Aside from that glitch, I think the recorder is quite nice, and I was really surprised at the speed of the copying as it was completed long before the video even finished playing! RMC will certainly hold a prominent spot in my newly resurrected 'audio video tools' file. Once again, thanks very much for your help. Will E

Hi again. Somehow in the shuffle I forgot to mention the reason I wanted that video in the first place. Although am interested in a video recorder, in this particular case what I really wanted was the 'audio' from that particular video. My intention was to first get the video, then extract the audio from it. Although I wasn't quite sure how I was going to do that, I figured I'd take it one step at a time. Anyway, do you guys know of something I could do to just get the 'audio' portion of that video? Tks again, Will E

How to convert FLV to MP3 without losing any quality (demux/extract MP3 from FLV)

Hi again, I looked at the link you posted about making an MP3 from an FLV, but the problem I would have with that goes back to the 75% issue, because the video I want doesn't have 'youtube' in the url. If I did that, I'd still only have 75% of the audio, right? What I was wondering was, perhaps there might be a tool, other than RMC, that would record '100%' of the 'audio', forgetting the video section entirely. Putting it another way, is there an 'audio' recorder, one that can lift just the 'audio' section of a streaming video, and would of course, record the audio in it's entirety. Thanks again, Will E

The above mentioned thread offers several ways to extract MP3 from recorded FLV files. This is the best way, because you don't lose any quality.
You can also use online services like vixy.net that will convert youtube videos to MP3 files.
And you can always use direct sound recording software (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-audio-stream/direct-sound-recording.htm) to record any audio from your sound card.
