I have tried EVERYTHING, programs listed here have worked for the adverts, but failed to even notice the show stream,
Any help or advice would be great,

WM Capture (http://wmrecorder.com/products/wm-capture/) will work great, no matter what encryption occurs in the future. It's a screen recorder though, but the quality looks just as good as a download IMO.
I would try that first.

I haven't found any embedded video players on the attached page.
4od uses Flash player for showing streaming content. Please try Flash stream recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/record-streaming-video-Adobe-Flash-FLV-videos.htm) like Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm) and Jaksta (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Jaksta-Streaming-Media%20Recorder-and-Converter.htm) and let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the rapid response guys. Unfortunately, Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm) doesn't address this problem, leastways not on my PC it doesn't. It manages to detect each of the adverts that are transmitted prior to the programme itself on Channel4.com 4OD, but not the actual programme for some reason. I've already built up quite a collection of adverts while trying different options.
Can somebody please try this and let me know if it's just me or there's something about the way Ch4 codes the progs under the new software. Thanks. :)

Try Jaksta (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Jaksta-Streaming-Media%20Recorder-and-Converter.htm). You don't need to buy it, just try a demo version.
Freeware URL Snooper (http://all-streaming-media.com/find-stream-URL/Project-URL-Snooper-Find-the-actual-stream-URL-Free-download.htm) may show something interesting as well.

I confirm that these don't work either. I appreciate that people in the US are doing their best and can't test their hypotheses because non-British IP addresses are blocked, but if there's anyone in the UK who knows how to crack this and can actually test out their ideas that would be great.

Unfortunately Channel4 has not been so considerate as to provide addresses for its programmes and even if they had I would not be inclined to execute commands from DOS prompts on my PC. Can someone please just try recording a programme from 4OD and let me know when they have succeeded, rather than (with the best will in the world) just posting complex messages about what ought to work. Thanks.

This is not only about screen video capture software (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-from-screen/), it also depends on how powerful your computer is, what video resolution and audio/video codecs you use.

That's a nice comparison!!! :D
It is true that few people know how to use rtmpdump and it is not an easy to use software. And when there will be a good tutorial for the program (or may be a nice GUI), I bet in a couple of days the developers of server software will introduce new changes and rtmpdump will stop working.
But I see only two alternatives here: either to learn more about rtmpdump or to capture video from your screen.

Make sure you use rtmpdump v1.6.
If 4od uses SWF verification, you need to find the URL of the SWF player, as well and provide the URL of the player, its SWF hash and SWF size as parameters for rtmpdump.
Please post the exact parameters you use and the rtmpdump output, otherwise it will be almost impossible to help.

I used 1.6, I just followed the on screen instructions to add the url and save location, it never asked me for the swf player location, I'll need to try and find some tutorial or documentation on it for that as I have no clue what command that is.
I posted my previous rtmpdump output a few posts up.

Sorry for not making a wrong statement. By command I meant exact parameters that you use with rtmpdump.
The program doesn't ask any details about SWF player.

I found that if you disable hardware acceleration via flash player (right click on the video playing), and then record the screen (I use Techsmith Camtasia), The quality is great with no slowdown, hope that helps some people.

Has there been any developments on this issue? I am annoyed by the new version of the 4od service too. I keep losing connection on my crappy wireless adapter in laptop so I have to sit through 30+ seconds of adverts and the program starts from the beginning. All I want is to dl the video to my comp with a resume function when I disconnect.
I noticed the following link in the temp folder of Opera but don't know whether it is the advert or the program:

I gave up in the end and just use WM Capture (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-from-screen/WM-Capture-screen-video-capture-software-that-records-with-high-quality.htm). The results are surprisingly satisfactory, with quality significantly better than achieved after a digital download followed by conversion from .asf to .avi or another editable format.
Although file size is larger, I've found that by recording pop-outs at medium window size I get a very acceptable balance between quality and file volume.
In any case, I never needed perfection in the first place. I'm only trying to help an expat family member to watch favourite programmes in far-away places, not trying to run a bootleg commercial venture.

WM Capture (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-from-screen/WM-Capture-screen-video-capture-software-that-records-with-high-quality.htm) can record even from those sound cards that do not allow simultaneous audio playing and recording. I forgot to add that I'm using Vista and I'm sure that's why a lot of other solutions wouldn't work for me. In my version of Vista, some of the options to change video parameters simply wouldn't work. Incidentally, Tunebite (http://undrm.info/remove-DRM-protection/TuneBite-Convert-DRM-protected-WMV-M4P-M4V-video-WMA-AAC-M4B-AA-music-audio-books-preserving-ID3-tags.htm) (which I use to DRM-strip downloads) loves my Vista system, whereas it always dropped frames on my old XP system.

I'm now more certain than ever that all this depends on your operating system, the video and sound cards installed and probably the amount of RAM, etc. rather than on the software application.

I've just tested it and you are right, the url detection is perfect and the program is downloaded in the background without the adverts. However, the resulting .asf file plays at the wrong speed - too fast - and my .asf to .wmv converter makes a good effort at correcting this but ultimately fails and has to drop blocks.

That is due to the way GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) builds the flv container for some flv files containing h264 video.
You can fix it by demuxing the file and remuxing into a .mp4 container or a new .flv container

Fixing (remuxing) takes around 5-15 seconds at most. GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) does the hard part (downloading the file). You likely won't find any other way to download from channel4. So if you give up that easy - at least it frees up a timeslot for you.

Success here - I'm an expat using a slow VPN connection. I used the trial version of GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) 8.8.46.
I downloaded 10 MB (trial limit) of Derren Brown and then extracted the .264 with FLV extract.
I used WinFF to extract the ACC and convert to AC3 then muxed the H264 & AC3 streams into a MKV container using MeGUI to play on my XBOX running XBMC. (Xbox is not fast enough to decode AAC) - it plays fine.
PS - I also tried the as-downloaded .FLV file on the xbox using the built in DVD player and it appears it would play at the right speed if it didn't struggle with the AAC codec - so are there PC based players that would play the FLV stream at the correct speed without the demuxing/muxing...?

My problems are in trying to download videos from http://www.channel4.com/programmes/4od.
Sorry for the long post, just trying to give all the info in an attempt to get this resolved.
I have found the URL of the video I want to download with URLSnooper, at least I think I have the right one. And I have what I believe is a correct command line with the correct parameters.
After finally getting RTMPSRV to work by doing the hosts file trick what I have pretty much matches with the results RTMPSRV gives.
One things that is different the URL for the SWF file. I can download the acutal swf file with the URL I get from URLSnooper but not the one the RTMPSRV gives. Regardless using one or the other does not make it work.
Using the command RTMPSRV gives here is the output

When RTMPSRV first got the command and tried it automatically I got two errors below but gets the above when I use the command prompt.
this one a few times before the command was executed
ERROR: RTMP_HashSWF: couldn't contact swfurl http://www.channel4.com/static/programmes/ass.et/flash/swf/4odplayer-4.49.5.swf
and this one most of the time after the command was executed
ERROR: RTMP_ReadPacket, failed to read RTMP packet header
Here is the command I came up. I can post the output if it will help:
C:\rtmpdump>rtmpdump -V -r rtmpe://ll.securestream.channel4.com/a4174/e1/mp4:assets/CH4_08_02_16_25880001001001_001.mp4 -a a4174/e1 -y mp4:xcuassets/CH4_08_02_16_25880001001001_001.mp4 -W http://www.channel4.com/static/programmes/asset/flash/swf/4odplayer-4.49.5.swf -o ik.flv -p http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-italian-kitchen/4od#2924187
Both RTMPSRV's and my command both seem to stop at bottom on Failed to play (stream ID: 1).
So it seems to me that both are pretty close, and I know close really doesn't matter, it has to be exactly right. Nonetheless, I cannot get 4oD videos and I don't why. It seems that things are right but nothing seems to work. I have read and tried many, many different commands but to no effect.
Also someone stated that StreamTransport worked on 4oD videos, but I can only get it to see the ads and does not show the real video URL and thus cannot download it. Also GetFLV throws up various URLs for the video file but cannot download them, maybe I need to try some more with it. Then there was a mention of get_flash_videos. I am using Windows and can't seem to get it to take to rtmpdump, not sure if these two only work together in Linux.
If someone, who is obviously more intelligent than I, could lead me in the right direction to download 4oD videos, point out my errors or offer any assistance even if it is to let me know that it can't be done, I would really appreciate it.
Cheers
As an aside if I use 2.2c I almost always get this error
WARNING: HandShake: Type mismatch: client sent 6, server answered 8
but not with 2.1c. Not sure if this is a bug in the new version, or if it depends on the command it is given or whether or not the error matters or it's operator error.
get-flash-videos is a perl script; as long as you have perl and rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) installed properly the script will run on any machine.
The note about the Handshake type mismatch is only a WARNING, not an ERROR. You can safely ignore it in this case. (A type 6 request can validly get 6, 8, or 9 in the reply. Other values would probably indicate an actual problem.)

StreamRecorder:
Thanks for the link, I had already read that. Seems to be screen capture is what is recommened. Not really what I wanted to do, I would rather download the original. Still need to give GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) another try.
hyc:
thanks for letting me know about the type mismatch. Still not sure why the RTMPSRV generated command does not work.
As for get-flash-videos
I believe I have both perl and rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) install properly according to the get_flash_video installation notes. I downloaded what it said to along with the two modules it mentions in the Windows install part and have RTMPDUMP in my system32 folder. I think that is the correct way. I will also try to get the other modules it mentions.
When I use this command
perl get_flash_videos rtmpe://ll.securestream.channel4.com/a4174/e1/mp4:xcuassets/CH4_08_02_16_25880001001001_001.mp4
I get this
Couldn't download 'rtmpe://ll.securestream.channel4.com/a4174/e1/mp4:xcuassets/CH4_08_02_16_25880001001001_001.mp4': 501 Protocol scheme 'rtmpe' is not supported
Can't locate object method "host" via package "URI::_foreign" at FlashVideo/URLFinder.pm line 64
I am probably not using the right command. I do realize that it says rtmpe not supported but as it uses RTMPDUMP for rtmp URLs I am not sure what to do as there are no options on the man page that I would put before the http web page that the video plays on.
It seems to me from my experimenting that both rtmpdump and get_flash_videos rely on the precision and correctness of the URL it is given. As such my parsing needs to be better but I can't understand the peculiarities of the RTMPDUMP errors like:
WARNING: Trying different position for client digest!
and
ERROR: RTMP_ReadPacket, failed to read RTMP packet header
that I get when RTMPSRV does the command structure and thus I would think would be correctly parsed by RTMPDUMP and download.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has been successful with downloading from 4oD with either RTMPDUMP or get_flash_videos or anything else other than screen capture.
I was able to take the address StreamTransport (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/StreamTransport-Download-HTTP-RTMP-RTMPE-streams.htm) got from a DemandFive video and edit to use in RTMPDUMP, but not one from SeeSaw. So I am not sure of the peculiarities, though I wish I know more.
Anyway, thanks for the info, I will continue with this as an intellectual pursuit and hopefully get some help and luck along the way.
Cheers
When I use this command
perl get_flash_videos rtmpe://ll.securestream.channel4.com/a4174/e1/mp4:xcuassets/CH4_08_02_16_25880001001001_001.mp4

get_flash_videos expects the HTTP URL of the web page hosting the video, it doesn't accept RTMP URLs. It will scrape the web pages itself to find the RTMP URLs and put them into the format that rtmpdump wants. The whole point of using the get_flash_videos script is to avoid the hassle of trying to find the RTMP URL yourself.

I can't get GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) to work for me. It must be operator error. I have tried different versions, portable versions, trial versions. It supposedly finds the URL sometimes and I choose download and then go to the FLV Downloader part and it never does anything. The green arrow icon changes to the red X and it never shows any progress. Sometimes it shows different URLs for the same video. It never seems to get the ad URLs, which is fine of course, but odd if it supposed to show downloadable videos. Regardless I guess some more trial and error with it is needed. Any ideas as to why GetFLV doesn't seem to work for me?
@hyc
I see now that it needs the http. But it never finds the URL for the rtmpe file. I have both channel4.pm and 4od.pm and brightcove.pm in the plugins folder. Looking at channel4.pm and 4od.pm files themselves they seem to need updating as I think the url scheme has changed.
I get
Using method 'generic' for http://www.channel4.com/programmes/sas-the-real-story/4od
Found 4odplayer-4.49.5.swf
Guessed http://www.channel4.com/programmes/sas-the-real-story/4odplayer-4.49.5.swf trying...
Exists on http://www.channel4.com/programmes/sas-the-real-story/4odplayer-4.49.5.swf: 400
Error: No URLs found at FlashVideo/Generic.pm line 129.
So it does not even call the plugin which is why I think it might needed updated. What is odd is that it gives the list of plugins then when it says "Trying to open plugin ..." it does not show them all and repeats some. So it does not I have no programming knowledge so I guess they will stay like they are until some comes along and changes them.
As you said the point of get_flash_videos is to get the URL and format it for RTMPDUMP. Even if it was working to catch the URL I don't forsee it formatting the command passed to RTMPDUMP any better than RTMPSRV does. And as I mentioned before the command generated by RTMPSRV doesn't work for me. And I can't seem to parse out any channel 4 rtmpe URL correctly, even though I seem to be doing ok with other sites.
RTMPSRV has a -C Z: in its command. I am not sure what null data it is wanting to put in. Looking things over it seems there might be a secure token, but when I use the -T parameter with what I think is the token I got from looking at URLSnooper it still does not work. I looked at both the get_flash_videos channel4.pm and a version of get_iplayer that has channel4 functionality and they both seem to speak to there being a secure token. Perhaps this is what I am missing. As I mentioned I think the channel4 get_flash_videos plugins need updating and as the get_iplayer channel4 portion looks similar it to fails to work also.
I have got rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) to work with other sites and I would like to get it to work with channel4 also. I just can't figure out what is so unique that I can't get the videos using RTMPDUMP.

We were discussing this over at xbmc.org forums.
Looking at at 4od the akami rtmpe streams needs a auth= parameter to play.
How to generate this though currently is unknown. The XML provided by channel4 for a program contains a token:
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/hestons-feasts/4od/asset/3069107?1274015087
this seems to be 136 bytes mime64 encoded. How to get from that to the auth= though is another thing.
auth strings look something like
da_a1dVaYdXaEcXcWbfdwdibdbncBakajbU-bl76LM-eS-gAT-kttDkpt7swpem8srnunsr3k2tTqvnsq7kYsckFtJsDphmMsfn6 ndrbk3sfp8noqdkVtSkIt9sCoem2sw
There is a log function in the javascript on the channel4 site
/static/programmes/js/controller/brand/catchup.js
that uses
/static/global/js/lib/util/hmacsha1.js (readable version @ http://pajhome.org.uk/crypt/md5/sha1.html)
I'm unsure if this is connected to the XML token though, or it might be doing a similar encryption. It has a function generateV1Signature which is used by a sendLogMessage function. This calls b64_hmac_sha1 to create a mime64 encoded signature.

As exobuzz has just said, the auth key needs to be generated. Here are what I believe to be a matching token (from the xml via wireshark) and auth string (from rtmpsrv):

Let us know which programs don't work and what kind of errors exactly you get with them when downloading from 4od:
StreamTransport (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/StreamTransport-Download-HTTP-RTMP-RTMPE-streams.htm)
get-flash-videos
youtube-dl (http://stream-recorder.com/forum/showpost.php?p=16980&postcount=49)
rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm)
GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm)
You can check what programs support RTMPE streams in the following thread:
RTMPE stream recording/downloading/capturing/ripping/saving
GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) works, but the progress display doesn't always. Check the file size being downloaded in the directory to see if it changes (you may have to refresh the screen). Also, the bottom panel can't always be expanded to allow you to accept the terms and conditions on the Channel4 website. Do this before loading the page.
Doesn't grab it when I.P. address is anonymized (for example, when unavailable in your country).

Make sure you have the full version, not the trial version.
Open GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) and copy or type the url into browser window. Use the browser in GetFLV, not an external browser.
When you play the video, a link will appear in the lower half of the screen. There will be a Download button to the right of it. Click it when the video is playing and recording should start.
When the video has finished playing, click on FLV Downloader in the left-hand navigation panel. This opens a panel with a list of rows of downloaded or downloading videos. The last one should appear at the bottom of the list. Click the Stop button when the video has finished playing, if it does not stop automatically. Wait for the video to finish playing before you start clicking anything else!Go to Options->Setting to find your download directory and it should be in that directory as a Flash movie.

However, I can't test it, as it won't load.

Phew! That was a tough one, but I got there in the end.
First, it wouldn't load at all in Firefox. It might have detected the Video Downloader plug-in and refused to load after I had confirmed my age as over 18, or it may have been something to do with this.
I got it to play relectantly in Chrome then tried to download it with CooJah (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Blader-freeware-RTMP-downloader.htm)6, but it refused to play ball. However, in Chrome it didn't ask me to confirm I was over 18, as it did in Firefox. I'm not sure why or whether this had something to do with the problem.
I pressed the Record button, but again, no dice.
Finally, I selected it in Coojah, right-clicked and added it as a "Tough" download. Then it grabbed it kicking and screaming all the way down, along with a boatload of trash.
That's how to do it. Thanks Channel 4/YouTube! It was quite funny.

Hi Guys, have been reading this with interest the last couple of days.
I am trying to get the entire 5th season of coach trip onto DVD for a friend which is on 4od.
It looks like the only way to do this is by purchasing GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) for $59.95.
Was wondering if anyone who already owns this prog would be interested in capturing the entire series for me and putting them on DVD for the same price as the programme as I would never use it again, plus I have contacted the authors to purchase and have received no response.
If anyone would be interested i'd be eternally greatfull and happy to pay ?50 for your troubles. Please get in touch :)

I've already said that CooJah (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Blader-freeware-RTMP-downloader.htm) will do it. If it's the 4OD on YouTube, even GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) won't do it, so you would be wasting your money. If you don't believe me, download the trial version of GetFlv and try it.
If you're still stuck, post the links to the series you're after and I'll do it.

Update:
I've just used StreamTransport (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/StreamTransport-Download-HTTP-RTMP-RTMPE-streams.htm) to download the first episode of Series 5 of Coach Trip. There are about 30 of them, so it's going to take a long time to download the rest.
This program is free and easy to use, so you can do it yourself.

danwilson82, I have the solution to your woes. Don't worry about capturing Coach Trip/downloading expensive apps/whatever.
Gimme a PM ;)
Actually, not this episode... this is the pilot that aired before the actual series was made and I searched the newsgroups and the file depositories but couldn't find it... eventually found the episode on the eDonkey network :)
Er... You obviously didn't check Usenet - the whole series is happily sitting there right now. I know this 'cos that's where I got them. You won't believe me tho' - so here's proof:

Erm no, sorry you're wrong... those six episodes aired as the series from 7th October this year - the pilot episode I was referring to aired alomost a year earlier in 2009. You won't believe me tho' - so here's the proof: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhoneShop#Episode_list

Actually, speaking of USENET, all of the Coachtrip S05 episodes that danwilson82 is after are available on the newsgroups except it seems episodes 9, 15, and 29. Couldn't find those three episodes on upload sites either so you might want to get those from 4od - the rest I can put on a couple if DVDs if you like (forget the 50 quid, just a couple of quid for the blank dvds and postage is fine), although I get the feeling that zarathustra is already on the case :)

Erm, nope ur wrong sorry, like I said the episode I was after is an episode that aired before the series was made (as part of the Channel 4 Comedy Showcase) and is called New Man. Those episodes you quote are the episodes that made up the series that aired a year later in October this year. You won't believe me tho' - so here's proof: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhoneShop#Episode_list
But thanks for looking for me anyway, it's appreciated. Like I said I already found the episode on eDonkey so it's all good :)

Apologies - my bad. I didn't realise you were after the pilot. In fact, I didn't realise it existed! Perhaps you'll up it sometime for the rest of us fans? ;) Am I weird for fancying Emma Fryer, who plays Janine (previously of Ideal)? It's those big bug eyes... :P

Yeah - you know what's what. SAB is the nuts. ;)
P.S. Spasticus, consider trying out some of the better NZB sites (I use NZBMatrix, as caruthers rightly said). NZB functionality removes the need to know what groups each BIN has been upped to - & makes downloading whole seasons, etc. a one-click process(!). Binsearch is also a good aggregator & will do the NZB creation for you.:)

I thought I would register to give my input. I too wanted to download a 4OD episode, but nothing works. The new version of GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) only records the adverts, even though the video plays. And this CooJah (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Blader-freeware-RTMP-downloader.htm). The installer appeared to be in a foreign language and when I did guess and install it, it crashed every browser it was linked to. Both chrome and firefox could barely even load before crashing to desktop. Internet explorer didnt crash, but it didnt play the videos either.
Any other software based ideas?

the only uk site that still works is the bbc iplayer. im wondering if its the latest update to flash thats killed it because i find it hard to see how every single streaming service will change at the same time.
i used Hotspot Shield (http://all-streaming-media.com/links/hotspotshield.htm) to try some american sites and its the same problem with them too..
im going to downgrade to a different flash version and see if that fixed the problem.
i might be wrong about the flash update, i dont really know a lot about how it all works, but if streamtransport is really dead its a very sad day indeed.

I too have been using Stream Transport for 4OD with issue for months and this week it has stopped working. However I have, today, tried a number of other programs and NOTHING seems to be able to download 4OD.
Does anyone have a method that works with programs shown 23/3 that has worked today?

I'm having the same problem with 4OD and ITV player. BBC iplayer is still working at the moment. I wonder if someone is selling an anti-video capture "solution" to the networks, and the Beeb (BBC) is taking its time getting clearance to pay out for it. It seems weird that both channels have suddenly stopped working this week. By the way, I have the old version of Flash, so the upgrade isn't the problem.
I guess we have to wait for someone to come up with a way of beating this new streaming technology. But while the Beeb still works, I'll be grabbing as much as I can before it stops working too. Sad week, so much still to grab.

I'm trying 8.9.9.9 now and so far it's been running 30 minutes and hasn't even found a file size in the downloader - let alone downloaded anything :-(
It did find 2 streams with different URLs (same title) which I'm trying to download without success.

Its interesting that CooJah (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Blader-freeware-RTMP-downloader.htm) has also stopped working with 4OD and Channel 5. I've been using StreamTransport (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/StreamTransport-Download-HTTP-RTMP-RTMPE-streams.htm) for the last 2 months, and its worked beautifully every time, until this week. yes, CooJah (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Blader-freeware-RTMP-downloader.htm) has stopped working in the last week or two.
Very disappointing. I just can't get my head around the rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) method etc
and if I'm reading some of these posts right anyway, that isn't working either for what I am wanting to download - as above Channel 4 and ITV Player.
When CoolJah is open the video won't play [it gives message about technical fault].
When I close Cooljah the video plays.
Annoying - all I want to do is share a few progs. with some ex-pat online friends, not make any profit.

im suprised that StreamTransport (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/StreamTransport-Download-HTTP-RTMP-RTMPE-streams.htm) lasted so long, when you see all the problems other people have had with adobe..
on 18th feb a site admin on the other site said that the developer had just been busy with other projects and thats why it had not been updated, but i cant imagine him wanting to rework his magic now to fix the new problems..
there is talk about them releasing the source code so someone can pick it up and try make it work again, lets just hope they continue in the spirit of the freedom and dont try and charge for something that might brake again.

i've checked it.
i dont live in UK so i used a primitive proxy of type B1. then surfed to this test url (Benidorm episode):
http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=225652
GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) caught some url and downloads it all fine.
http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/6250/snap1e.gif
if you live in UK and GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) doesnt do anything useful for you, then it's because you use a demo version (or a cr***ed version). from my own experience they simply dont work. a purchased version of GFLV will work. see screenshot above. StreamTransport (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/StreamTransport-Download-HTTP-RTMP-RTMPE-streams.htm) is very similar to GFLV, with the difference that ST is freeware and updated seldom and GFLV, in contrast, a commercial piece of software. GFLV is updated very frequently (more than 1x per month!) and that's what you pay for: a working solution. i like ST .. but it's no good if it aint work, is it? ;) (When you place your order for GFLV, please refer to "placebo" and you'll get a discount coupon ;) )
@getflv
you're welcome. i herewith did the testing yet for the _www.itv.com website. am glad to help (you). :D
just an observation, itv.com is less protected (or difficult) than hulu.com. With Hulu, my B1 proxies dont work shit. I dont live in the States, i cant play Hulu videos. I dont live in UK but i do can play iTV videos.
i am just saying that ST and CJB dont work here, but a purchased version of GFLV does. so everyone buy a copy of GFLV!! :)
(or learn how to dump the video with rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm). Rtmpdump *always* works with *any* website. Including Hulu! And rtmpdump is FREE. it's just nothing to play with for softies.)

@ placebo thanks for the info, although ima little bit reluctant to pay out for software without seeing it in action for myself.. i would have thought the whole point of a demo would be so people KNEW it did exactly what they wanted before the pay for it... even if they fixed it to say only download 3 times before running out ,atleast we could then try it on 3 different channels.
have you tried hulu using Hotspot Shield (http://all-streaming-media.com/links/hotspotshield.htm)?? i never have any problems connecting with that from the uk...

yeah, there are different conceptions of "demo software" and i would go with yours too. GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm)'s demo version is too restricted, i must admit. i will post more screenshots of GFLV in action (on the iTV.com webpages) later on.

rtmpe://ll.securestream.channel4.com:1935/a4174/e1/?ovpfv=1.1&e=1301305313&ip=93.96.179.128&h=4db6b4ec4d0b2b7e1e46d9f892875e2a/?e=1301305313&ip=93.96.179.128&h=4db6b4ec4d0b2b7e1e46d9f892875e2a
rtmpe://ll.securestream.channel4.com:443/a4174/e1/?ovpfv=1.1&e=1301342335&ip=178.238.142.242&h=36aca5121fb2a95a96a2bceb48a19cd0
Then GFLV captures all kinds of different rtmp/rtmpe streams, some url's for the commercial ads and ~2 url's for the actual video. Try to download the 2nd video url! Two typical situations are the following (and delete the ads url's!):
http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/8167/snap7.th.gif (http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/8167/snap7.gif) , http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3092/snap4d.th.jpg (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3092/snap4d.jpg)
Typically only one video url downloads well. And, you can download several videos at a time (here: Come Dine With Me)

channel4 is a bit harder than itv. so here another proof (screenshots), ta-rah!
GOOD NEWS. getflv posted an updated version on their website (today!!):
GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) Version 9.0.0.0,
and with it i was able to download the video!!
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6281/snap1dt.th.jpg (http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6281/snap1dt.jpg)
the FIRST (line#1) and the LAST line (line#6) belong to the same (actual) video clip. the url's in between, lines #2-#5, belong to the ads (commercial clips of ~40secs length). i waited until all ads were gone and until line#6 appeared. then "Download" and GFLV begins to download the video without problems.

I just want to thank Placebo for grabbing something off ITV Player for me on Sunday night [despite it being late]
He used GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm) - I might look into it as nothing else seems to work any more.
I just cannot get my head round this rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) thing, even though I have downloaded all the bits and pieces for it, including something called Strawberry Perl, but I can't figure it out and just haven't got the time or concentration to learn at the moment
the only thing is, the videos I got in flv just wouldn't convert to avi or MP4 in Daniusoft Video Converter Ultimate, or Any Video Converter Professional - and the first one usually handles anything.
So I had to use ConvertXtoDVD to convert the flv's to DVD format
and then use Auto Gordian Knot to get avi from them so I could join the 2 parts - as you can imagine, this took many hours and I couldn't use my computer for other things while it was being done,
but the quality was ok [infact the quality on the original flv was excellent, I was quite surprised]
so thanks again, Placebo

@nonprofit, thanks for your report and kind words. was a pleasure to help (since, maybe, not too many own a purchased copy of GFLV.); just the FREE proxying thing (i've tried various types A, B, C, etc.) was killing me :p
Conversion of media files is discussed here:
http://stream-recorder.com/forum/converting-audio-video-files-f16.html
Conversion causes a degradation of quality (because none can be better than the original ;) ). To minimize quality loss, the video and audio tracks could be extracted losslessly with FLVExtract and then you could put them back together joined in a *.MP4-container or *.AVI-format. Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm) can do conversions and extractions too .. but these itv FLV-files are quite something! I've never done joining of video parts before so i cant help here. I would probably try to do everything in Nero 10.
you can join FLV-video parts with FLV Joiner (freeware):

WM Capture (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-from-screen/WM-Capture-screen-video-capture-software-that-records-with-high-quality.htm) 5 can capture video from screen into DVD-Video .ISO file. No need to convert for hours.

I only had to do that because I wanted an avi actually [to upload for someone who is abroad and can't see ITVPlayer]
although I can use the resulting DVD files now to burn a copy for myself
I've tried a screen capture (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-from-screen/) thing and the frame size was confusing to me, and how it kept mirroring/reflecting what it was doing [sorry, I can't explain, but it's not the way for me]

I have version StreamTransport (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/StreamTransport-Download-HTTP-RTMP-RTMPE-streams.htm) 1.0.2.2041 , and know 2 other people with that version and none of them can capture itv,5od,4od any more.... same problem with american sites using HSS, and they always worked in the past.
Version 1.0.2.2041 either errors out or completely locks up
Version 1.0.2.2171 plays everything but downloads nothing.
BBC iplayer can be captured on pretty much anything because its just secure, not rtmpe.
After some digging around i found a load of previous versions hosted on a site and tried a few of them, and still the same problem...
So i think im going to give up.. ive never got my head around the rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) thing and having already forked out for Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm) (rmc) 3 and 4 in the past i dont think ill try GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm).

@blazegmc
i think my own creative posts made it clear and are proof enough (even though i dont live in UK or Hongkong) that these days the only working tool to capture Hulu (see other thread for my screenshots), iTV, and Channel4 4od is GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm). I also verified that GFLV v8.9.9.9 was not able to download the 4od whereas in GFLV v9.0.0.0 this was fixed. (I use a WindowsXP machine by the way.).
rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) is always a working alternative (but primarily meant for non-Windows users like nullacht, hyc, a. o.) and freeware. i have some minimal working knowledge, but i prefer my Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm) 4, GetFLV (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/GetFLV-Download-and-convert-flash-video-streaming.htm), and other Windows tools.
Regarding pocket money.. i rather enjoy supporting the coders' work with some bucks (as a symbolic act) instead of paying 10pounds for admission to a night club or 5pounds for a pint beer. The next time you spend some money for your very personal needs, pleasure or hobby (be it a book, CD, DVD, or similar "Amazon (http://all-streaming-media.com/links/amazon.php) item") - think that it could have gone directly to the paypal account of a software coder and generated some honest smile of true joy in his/her face
Buying great little software tools to make their coders smile .. i REALLY LIKE that idea. I just want to show them that i care and support. You know.. maintaining good vibes. And joy.
:)
(ok, the price of GFLV is quite steep. yikes :o )

I've just spent 2 days trying to get rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) working on Windows 7, XP, 2000 (server and workstation), 2003 (server and workstation) and Linux and 2.3 does NOT work at all! It seems to fail at the first response from the server.
For various reasons I cannot download and compile source code which leaves me using pre-compiled binaries.
nullacht reports that "v2.3 r563 works perfectly" but as yet I have been unable to find this version to test.
Looking at the StreamTransport (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/StreamTransport-Download-HTTP-RTMP-RTMPE-streams.htm) website they say way 6 to 8 months for a fix! So I think it is fair to say this joins the ever growing ranks of abandonware.

i have been using the regular v2.3 *.exe from the official download site, like you. Didnt work for me (and i am unwilling to do more rtmpdump testing. i hate that tool! :D And i have something much better: GetFLV :D :D :D ), as mentioned several times before.
During the 2 days of testing, instead of the testing you could have gone babysitting next door at your neighbour's and earned the pocket money to buy a Golden Version of GetFLV.
I guarantee you. Once you've tried GFLV on all those popular fancy sites (Hulu, Channel4, iTV, BBC iPlayer) and see how easy it is --GFLV doesnt crash anymore, but it sometimes freezes, or you have to reload the webpages or re-launch the application because GFLV doesnt catch the url's at the very first attempt. Eventually it does catch and download the url!-- you will never go back to trying rtmpdump.
I still test rtmpdump .. simply because i am a mod here, and i need to delete posts or users when they assert that rtmpdump downloads "perfect streams" and this assertion isnt true. So when people (other than me) begin to talk shit, i kick and delete their *ss. That's what a mod like me does. That's why i still fire up rtmpdump.exe once in a while. ;)

Not disheartened (much) I build myself a Linux machine running Unbuntu 9.10 and downloaded and compiles it all for myself.

Command output is:-

and running this fails on both Windows and Linux.

the command (created by your rtmpsrv.exe) looks really really good. perfect. Mine was not different.
Then we edit back the host file (127.0.0.0 local host).
Finally we run the command. And if even UK-people fail to run this perfect command line, then .. either the command is wrong or rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) simply does not work with Channel4 anymore.
Congrats to installing Linux and compiling your own rtmpdump binaries! :)
srpenn82 is an experienced IT dude (with coding, Linux and PC experience, see his homepage). If he says that he's tested it and that it didnt work, then i believe him. If some other person (nullacht, o.ä.) says that it works, then i dont believe it unless i see 100% unambiguous proof or evidence.

you say this when the truth is there is a glaring problem with the binaries, which is that they do not support type 9 RTMPE handshakes. many websites including hulu now require this handshake and rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) will fail.

Did you even care to read the post? in last para i have clearly mentioned the RTMPE 9 for being the reason for nonworking of rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) on some websites. if a feature is not yet supported by software how it can be compilation problem?
...and KSV's screenshots showcase rtmpdump's (v2.3.r.5.6.5) action on newmusiclive.ca-website, and not on HuluDOTcom-website. ;) You both guys check out the latest information posted on the WWW (http://tinyurl.com/3hgona5). There it clearly says that rtmpdump doesnt work any longer with modern websites.
This thread is about Channel4 4OD by the way. Ha!
I didn't say that these binaries work on Hulu or 4OD. These sites also may have switched to new handshake which is not yet supported by rtmpdump. The purpose of screenshots was to show that they are properly compiled and work on sites that doesn't force Flash 10 handshake.

If it's such a problem then I'd expect all servers to move to this sooner (rather than later) to enforce/protect copyright and intellectual property rights etc.

it will work when someone writes the code for it to work. as far as i know right now no one is even working on it.

Can someone please get me a video from ITV player, if they know how?
placebo
04-21-2011, 11:49 AM
hi kerry, i'll try to help dillan.
interesting to note that iTV player does stream in different qualities. well, at least 2 different bitrates: low quality and standard quality.
and i think that GetFLV catches 2 url's. But they are not labelled accordingly (i.e. the fields in the "Bitrate"-column are empty!).
So you must play your luck. One of the url's (both of which look identical!) will download the higher quality stream, the other one the lower quality stream.
This should be fixed in future versions of GetFLV.

ITV/4OD have updated to a later version of Adobe and their "handshake" is now different, within the past 2 months.
GetFLV 9.0 or later works, but this is expensive, and out of many people's price range.
Replay Media Catcher can be updated to get BBC Iplayer RTMPE streams but nothing more.
Get-Flash-Videos works (http://code.google.com/p/get-flash-videos/issues/detail?id=248) but needs Debian
The patch new updates use on RTMPDump is here (http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/rtmpdump/2011-March/001328.html)
The rtmpdump update above seems to mention a file location (trunk/librtmp) Is anyone familiar with how to use this or even what Operating System this is for?
I'm looking to try and download this video as an example. http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=233770
By snooping and using an old version of GetFLV I had lying around, the corresponding rtmpe url is:
rtmpe://cp72511.edgefcs.net:1935/ondemand?ovpfv=1.1&auth=eaEajbDdCdBaYdkdAcad.c2b3dadybBcbaCaOaqdzcLcl bAascoa5aSagbta_bvbJb3-bnS4.7-eS-dyv4KDujvuws&aifp=v002&slist=production/mp4:production/CATCHUP/e22e4da7/4410/4a25/bf24/090de4dd861f/1-9807-0002-001_SING-IF-YOU-CAN_TX230411_ITV1200_16X9.MP4
If anyone knows anything else or have managed to get it working, please let me know. Thank you very much!

The "handshake" is type 9 RTMPE handshake
The handshake is used with RTMPE streams. rtmpdump cannot handle sites that require a type 9 handshake, until someone makes a patch for it.
get-flash-videos relies on rtmpdump for RTMP streams, hence if rtmpdump does not work, then get-flash-videos is definitely not going to work.
the file you are referring to (handshake.h) is a source file. for it to be of use it has to be compiled into the rtmpdump program. i have instructions for windows here
http://svnpenn.blogspot.com/2011/03/rtmpdump.html
Finally, You have shown that you do not know about:
1. get-flash-videos
2. source code
3. compiling programs
4. programming in general
a more appropriate thread title would be "What I know so far" or "Hey guys how do I download from ITV"

Ok, thanks for replying Steven. I'm a secret fan of your blog by the way, you're very clever when it comes to techie stuff. I am unfortunately not gifted in the compiling.

a more appropriate thread title would be "What I know so far" or "Hey guys how do I download from ITV"
even more appropriate is to merge threads covering the same topic ("i want to leech FREE itv or 4od streams, plz heeelp!!"). SRF (http://stream-recorder.com/forum/) abounds with threads starting all the same way treating similar aspects of a subject. Subject here is itv/4od, aspect is the knowledge of howtodownload from there.
@jimmycarlos
thanks for the summary and the link to The rtmpdump Archives (http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/rtmpdump/), new to me! I cant do but primitive coding and yes GFLV (http://getflv.net) is costly .. but in turn i have a healthy, sound attitude: i pay and they do the coding job :D The high price tag isnt unjustified since these days there is no competition by neither freeware nor payware. If you're a techie or coder by heart then you'd never be interested in purchasing downloaders .. otherwise you may leave your personal comments and suggestions ("its my birthday, plz give me free copy of GetFLV Golden Version!") here:
GetFLV user reviews, user feedback & suggestions (http://stream-recorder.com/forum/getflv-user-reviews-user-feedback-suggestions-t8862.html)
And here is what i know:
StreamTransport [ST], a freeware RTMPE-downloader GUI, did the trick with 4OD/iTV in the past but the developer ("Tery"; not to be confused with "Terry" ;) ) has put the development on hold (http://www.rtmpe.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=2). Note that ST is "owned" by Jack King (http://stream-recorder.com/forum/showpost.php?p=23313&postcount=6) who runs the commercial variants of ST on his other 100+ business websites, such as moyea.com, foxreal.com, FLVsoft.com, etc. I am inclined to say that someone who runs 100 websites (in order to promote his few low quality products under different names) abuses the Google SEO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization) ("spammer!") but for sure he must be very busy (http://www.rtmpe.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=2) making money , so no time left for frequent ST updates! :(
Maybe he even decided to abandon ST (=appetizer for Moyea/Foxreal/FLVsoft/.. clone products!) and sell exclusively commercial products instead. I'll ask him about news and his plans..

Hey chap, thank you for your reply.
I still don't see why I cannot download the video.
I see you have rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) inside a folder called "rtmpdump-2.3", although you are using "rtmpdump2.1d.exe"
I downloaded rtmpdum from here: http://rtmpdump.mplayerhq.hu/download/, is there anything different I should do?
I'm using RTMPexplorer (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/RTMPExplorer-freeware-GUI-for-rtmpsrv-Windows.htm) to get the command, which seems pretty much the same as yours... tried it again, but no success. What could I be doing wrong?

I think the problem is I cannot get the video 'cause, even though RTMPexplorer (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/RTMPExplorer-freeware-GUI-for-rtmpsrv-Windows.htm) captures the url and parameters, the video doesn't start playing in the browser, so it won't start recording; and I guess that's because of the crappy proxy I use, hehe.

4OD is is puzzling me too: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/gok-cooks-chinese/4od#3376664
Using the HOSTS redirection method in Windows to RTMPSRV gives me this error:
http://i50.tinypic.com/2zqht21.png
Using the REDIRECT method in Ubuntu to RTMPSRV gives the same result:
http://i50.tinypic.com/15ewlg2.png
but if I use RTMPDumpHelper it works:
http://i49.tinypic.com/3xax1.png
The only differences I can see is the server handshake, anyone have a clue why one program works and the recommended methods don't?
