If you want to edit songs like trim beginning and end, and join songs you can try using Windows Movie Maker.
If you want to split a song up into separate parts use AVI Mux Gui, I think also you can join songs as well. It converts into .mka, but you always use like SUPER (http://all-streaming-media.com/convert-audio-video-files/SUPER-Simplified-Universal-Player-Encoder-Renderer-freeware-video-converter.htm)(c) to convert it into .mp3.
