ted.com uses rtmp:// .flv streams. You can download or capture them without any problem:
FAQ: How to record/download/capture/save Adobe Flash .FLV video RTMP stream from embedded player (http://all-streaming-media.com/faq/recording-media-stream/faq-record-download-capture-save-flash-flv-video-rtmp.htm)
Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm) can perfectly download RTMP .flv videos from Ted.com:

And you don't really need any streaming video recorders (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/all-streaming-video-recording-software.htm) for this web-site. You can just click onto the Download button below the video and download MP3 audio or MP4 video.

Yes that looks quite straightforward but at least for me it simply does not work & I guess the person who originally posted the question also found it did not work.
I use the latest Version of FF & Win7(64).
On the TED site the download button is plainly visible & when pressed the video resets on another page & allows the selection of the desired mp4 quality. I usually select download to desktop when trialing but in 3 years of watching TED it has never worked which is infuriating.
I am aware that several add-ons to FF are available that might resolve but they also often result in a severe loss of reliability for FF so I am now very wary of adding anything for which I can not find a clear need.
I do not use IE & Chrome (until recently) my favourite browser now refuses to work even after a reinstall.
