Couldn't find a forum here for beginner's questions, so I hope you don't mind me asking them here.

I am looking at Jaksta (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Jaksta-Streaming-Media%20Recorder-and-Converter.htm) and Replay Media Catcher (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Replay-Media-Catcher-HTTP-RTMP-FLV-MP3-ripper-recorder.htm). They seem to be the most popular out there, and it seems both are able to download or record from myfreecams.com from some info I found.

I have a few questions though.

What is the difference between recording and downloading? Is the end result the same? A flv I can take with me anywhere?

What is the major difference between Jaksta, and Replay Media Catcher?

Since I am going to get one of these, I want the one which can download from best sites. This is subjective though. I use pandora, hulu, myfreecams (discovered it today :P). I also come across other sites which use flash.


I am leaning towards Jaksta, but your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Recording means capturing packets coming from the flash player and save them as a file, it is useful when recording from a website that uses anti-leech technique.

Downloading means straight forward downloading from source url, it downloads faster than real time buffering.

both methods can get you the same FLV files, but there is a problem "recording" flv live stream, the video plays too fast

I tried both programs, but i must say i love RMC more.
RMC's GUI is better, Jaksta requires .NET framework 2.0 or above to be installed, which is very inconvenient. And this kind of application uses a lot of system memory, it sometimes crashes too.

As of download/record ability, both applications are great at recording from most of media protocols. Jaksta is better in recording Windows Media streams(MMS,RTSP). RMC can split and tag songs from recording radio program.

Jaksta can't download/capture SWF verification protected videos, RMC can do it with the old plugin

There are also some useful mini tools inside RMC. Jaksta can also convert files

The most important thing is, the flexibilty to update the program, sometimes the developers make a change to RMC, you just need to download an updated plugin to replace the old one,you cant do it with Jaksta

My opinion is that RMC is better in downloading flash videos
It can split and tag songs from Pandora
And the customer service in my opinion is better,and they offer a reasonable price

Jaksta (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Jaksta-Streaming-Media%20Recorder-and-Converter.htm) is not good or not as expected.

The download speed is equivalent to the recording speed.
If the steams takes 1 hour to play the download also takes 1 hour.
And it seems there is no refunds or no money back guarantee.
I don't recommend this unless there is money back guarantee.

I went with Jaksta (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Jaksta-Streaming-Media%20Recorder-and-Converter.htm). The pandora feature wasn't as important since I discovered Spotify, and it works on the live cam site I wanted it for :). Download speeds aren't that important to me since I only get about 150kb down anyway.

noob described the difference perfectly. but you should also notice that the following terms are widely misused when talking about audio/video streams: recording, downloading, capturing, saving, ripping, dumping, snagging. While downloading is always downloading, say recording can mean downloading, capturing packets from streaming player or recording from screen.

Dumping is used by MPlayer, VLC player to describe the process of saving to hd the content that is being played by these streaming media players.

Downloading, dumping, capturing packets from a streaming player allows to get identical copies of the files being streamed. The only difference is that on-demand streams can be downloaded faster than in real time while dumping and capturing packets is always in real time (or as fast as buffering).

As for the incorrect/misleading comments about Jaksta v RMC:

1. Jaksta has a money back guarantee.

2. Jaksta does indeed use .NET 2.0. If you have been keeping your XP machine up todate .NET 2.0 will already be installed. If not then it will be installed from the MS website with no intervention required from you. On Vista and Windows 7 it is already part of the OS.

3. Memory usage - download and run RMC and Jaksta side by side and see which one uses the most memory. Jaksta stores the download/recording history which uses memory. RMC does not. Memory for .Net 2.0 applications is manged by the framework itself. Memory usage of both applications is small in comparison to most other apps you run on your machine.

4. RMC does have an automatic update system that installs modules as they are updated by the developer. This automatic update was used to remove functionality that I and many other users had paid for after Applian was sued by Adobe. A great feature! Heres hoping they will never use that feature again but it is still there. With Jaksta you make the decision to download and upgrade and are prompted through Jaksta's UI when a new release is available for download.

Applian charges not for every upgrade. Jaksta LLC is a new company so we will see in the future whether you will charge for upgrades or not.

Streaming Star has free lifetime upgrades, but it stopped updating products like Bit Recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/Bit-Recorder-Capture-RTMP-HTTP-audio-video-streams-from-Flash-player.htm) and supporting the users.

However, I can tell a different story. Which program is better for your needs depends on your system and the sites you want to capture.

Unfortunately RMC locks my browsers after some time of usage which can only be solved by a complete reboot while Jaksta runs stable as a rock.

Another thing is, I read everywhere that RMC's support is supposed to be superior. However, my experience is different. RMC support simple stopped answering at some point while the guys at Jaksta answered all my emails and even provided me with a beta version.

Both programs come with problems and annoyances but in the end Jaksta is my favourite.

There is a clear difference between Replay Media Catcher 3 (RMC3) and Replay Media Catcher 4 (RMC4) but the difference between RMC4 and Jaksta isnt that clear.
