FairUse4WM (http://undrm.info/remove-DRM-protection/FairUse4WM-freeware-DRM-removal-Windows-software-Strip-copy-protection-from-WMV-ASF-WMA-Windows-Media-Player.htm) doesn't work on Windows Vista so you don't need to roll back your WMP. Besides I suppose you can't roll-back WMP on Vista 'coz it comes with WMP 11 final.
You may install Windows XP onto virtual machine (either VMWare or Microsoft Virtual PC). Then re-download media files from an online store onto your Windows XP. Remeber that WMP on your Windows XP shouldn't have version higher than 11.0.5705.5043. And never upgrade your WMP!
On your Windows XP remove DRM protection with FairUse4WM (http://undrm.info/remove-DRM-protection/FairUse4WM-freeware-DRM-removal-Windows-software-Strip-copy-protection-from-WMV-ASF-WMA-Windows-Media-Player.htm) and transfer DRM free files to your Windows Vista.
You may also use other DRM removal software (http://undrm.info/remove-DRM-protection/). Soundtaxi (http://undrm.info/remove-DRM-protection/SoundTaxi-Convert-DRM-protected-music-from-Windows-Media-Player-iTunes-Napster-Yahoo-Music-Rhapsody.htm) and Tunebite (http://undrm.info/remove-DRM-protection/TuneBite-Convert-DRM-protected-WMV-M4P-M4V-video-WMA-AAC-M4B-AA-music-audio-books-preserving-ID3-tags.htm) work on Windows Vista x32 (haven't seen any DRM removal software that supports x64).

I already paid $50 for the audio book, i was hoping to avoid having to pay anthor 15 for sound taxi which seems like my only option at the moment.

If you don't wanna pay any money, then you may install Windows XP as suggested or use direct sound recording software (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-audio-stream/direct-sound-recording.htm) like Audacity (http://all-streaming-media.com/edit-audio-video/Audacity-free-sound-editor-Windows-Linux-MacOSX.htm) to record from your sound card.

fu4m 1.3 fix-2 (http://undrm.info/remove-DRM-protection/FairUse4WM-freeware-DRM-removal-Windows-software-Strip-copy-protection-from-WMV-ASF-WMA-Windows-Media-Player.htm#fu4m13fix2) doesn't work with the latest IBX, so you can downgrade Windows Media Player or use the latest version of drmdbg that works with IBX 11.0.6000.7000 and on Windows Vista.
drmbdg is a console apllication, so it is not as pretty as FairUse4WM. Besides after running drmdbg you need to use drm2wmv or freeme2.
