Sorry, but I didn't really understand your question.
BBC uses embedded Real Player on its web-pages. You can listen to/watch streaming Real Media/Real Audio files with it.
You must have Real Player or free Real Alternative installed to be able to listen to/watch steraming media content at BBC.
IMHO the Real Alternative is much better than the Real Player;)
To save Real Audio/Real Media streams to hd you may use RM Recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rmrecorder-save-Real-stream-to-disk.htm) or other stream recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/all-streaming-video-recording-software.htm) supporting Real format.
After saving Real streaming files to hd, you may play them with Real Player. If you install Real Alternative you will be able to play them using any direct x based player including Windows Media Player and Windows Media Player Classic.
