I would like to download some .smi files on the Hard Disk for later listening.

I have retrieved the addresses by URL snooper but they show as Protocol GET Realmedia file or GET Windows media file (Relative). If I paste the URL address on the web browser URL location box, nothing happens. The url has the suffix .smi or .wma.

Any ideas?

Is there any freeware available that can do the job?

Thanks for help.

See All streaming video recording software (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/all-streaming-video-recording-software.htm) and All streaming audio recording software (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-audio-stream/all-streaming-audio-recording-software.htm). There you will find the most popular stream recorders. Some stream recorders are free, others are free to try.

You may also use shareware WM Recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/WMRecorder-One-click-online-audio-video-stream-recorder.htm) for free to find Windows Media and Real Media stream URLs.

You may also post the URL of a web-site here so that we can take a look.

The web-site provides Windows Media and Real Audio streams.

Find the URL with WM Recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/WMRecorder-One-click-online-audio-video-stream-recorder.htm) or URL Snooper (http://all-streaming-media.com/find-stream-URL/Project-URL-Snooper-Find-the-actual-stream-URL-Free-download.htm) and record Windows Media audio .WMA streams.

If you like free media stream recorders (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/all-streaming-video-recording-software.htm) you may try GetAsfStream and SDP receiver for Windows Media streams. GetAsfStream can also find stream URLs.

URL Snooper doesn't work for me here. But I was able to get stream URLs from the .asx metafile (you may find it in the cache folder of your browser). It looks like this:
<ASX VERSION="3">
<BASE HREF="http://205.134.247.2/QdZmq-LL/" />
<ENTRY>
<TITLE>{'listorder':['Name','Artist','Ragam','Thalam','Composer','Instr ument'],'Instrument':'Violin','Artist':[{'data':'Kanyakumari A','type':'text'},{'src':'/z/default/i/ri/9.0.gif','type':'image'}],'mcol':'album','xid':'1520','Name':'Dudukugala',' secname':'carnatic_instrumental','secid':'3'}</TITLE>
<REF HREF="wm/carnatic/instrument/kanyakumari/SacredGemsOfThyagaraja/Duduku.wma" />
</ENTRY>
</ASX> Combining http://205.134.247.2/QdZmq-LL/ with wm/carnatic/instrument/kanyakumari/SacredGemsOfThyagaraja/Duduku.wma you get the stream URL:http://205.134.247.2/QdZmq-LL/wm/carnatic/instrument/kanyakumari/SacredGemsOfThyagaraja/Duduku.wma

You can do the same with .smi files as I did with .asx files. The only problem is that Windows Media stream recorders are usually more reliable compared to Real Audio recorders and it is easier to edit and convert Windows Media files than Real Audio files.

sorry to ask a silly question but how do i open the browser cache to see what you have described in the earlier message?

Incidentally, for a particular recording, I got the following on the URL snooper:

http://64.94.235.125/QdZmq-LL/wm/film/hin/moviewise/S/Savera/Theharo.smi

http://205.134.247.2/QdZmq-LL/wm/film/hin/moviewise/S/Savera/Theharo.wma

if i copy paste the above in the browser URL address space and click, the player opens and starts the stream instead of bringing up the download dialogue box asking whether to open or save.

Opening the cache folder of your browser
In the Internet Explorer click [Tools] - [Internet Options...] - [Temporary Internet files] - [Settings...] - [View Files...].
In the Firefox browser usually it is
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\something.default\ca che\
In the Mozilla browser click [Edit] - [Preferences...] - [Advanced] - [Cache] and find your cache folder. Usually it is C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\your_username\APPLICATION DATA\Mozilla\Profiles\default\something.slt\cache\
In Opera browser open the following folder" c:\Program files\Opera\cache4\
where c:\Program files\Opera\ is the folder in which you installed Opera.

Usually Real Audio streams have .RAM, .SMI, .SMIL metafiles. Just sort the files by date and find file extensions you have no idea about. Then open them with a text editor and try to find the stream URL.

Real Audio streams URLs usually end up filename with .RA, .RM or .RAM extension.

You should look for .asx, .smi metafiles. It is safe to open them with a text editor like Windows Notepad.

I tried getting the address from the .smil files and downloading from the address... But doesn't seem to work for me. (It downloads a .ra file of o bytes and when i open it with notepad it says

Cache: 404 file not found

Has the site policy changes? Can somebody offer some guidance?

Try to use a proper user-agent in your media stream recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/all-streaming-video-recording-software.htm). Example of user-agent Windows Media Player player can use.
NSPlayer/9.0.0.2980
Or just download with software like WM Recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/WMRecorder-One-click-online-audio-video-stream-recorder.htm).

Thanks buddy... But i was not trying to "record" the stream. I am attempting to do a direct file download, following the steps discussed in the posts in this thread. And when the file download is actually supposed to start, i get the file, but of 0 bytes size and containing the error message. Is there some setting that i can change to handle this..?

(I hope i am making sense. If not please feel to correct )

Everybody (including me) uses the word record as he likes so everything is a little bit confused. By recording here I meant downloading/capturing/ripping the stream. WM Recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/WMRecorder-One-click-online-audio-video-stream-recorder.htm) doesn't have direct sound recording feature.

Thanks a Ton, WM recorder seems to work for me (but for the fact that i have to reinstall the demo version after every 10 minutes of use).

Is there a freely available alternate?

Most media stream recorders (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/all-streaming-video-recording-software.htm) support Windows Media streamed through HTTP. They might not be as good as WM Recorder (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/WMRecorder-One-click-online-audio-video-stream-recorder.htm), but should work with this stream.
