Hello everybody,

I've been trying to download a pre-recorded stream from the Yahoo Screen site but have had no luck so far. I've read through the forum and was not able to find any instructions for this particular site.

Every day Yahoo Screen broadcasts a live concert stream and then they offer on demand viewing for 24 hours. I've been trying to download an on-demand stream but the closest I've been able to get is to download 9 second .ts files.

I have tried the following applications: GetFLV, StreamTrasnport, Replay Media Catcher 4, Atresdownloader, AdobeHDS.php script, ffmpeg.exe Firefox CacheViewer, DownloadHelper and DownloadThemAll!

The closest I came was by figuring out the URL of the .ts streams and then using DownloadThemAll! to automatically download each individual file. Unfortunately, there are unpredictable gaps in sequencing of the files so I was unable to get the entire performance.

I have installed URLSnooper but I'm not sure what I should be filtering on. I have tried filtering on "f4m" and "m3u8" but nothing appears.

Am I on the right track - what should I be looking for?

A method to find the hls (m3u8) playlist url for yahoo live and live replay events:

Find the numbered url to the event. This can be found on the yahoo screen main page.

For your example it is;

https://screen.yahoo.com/moon-taxi-live-concert-130000080.html


Then view the source of that page, using Ctrl-U or right-click, view source. Search for "m3u8".

Thank you surya987 and blimey for your advice on how to discover the m3u8 files. I have now used ffmpeg to download the stream. Here is the command:

ffmpeg.exe -i https://yahoo-live.hs.llnwd.net/livenation3p_6128.m3u8 -c copy "myvideo.ts"

If I could ask one final question. Since I've partially watched the above stream, any subsequent viewings (and downloadings) start from where I viewed it last. Is it possible to start the download from the beginning?

Anyway, thanks again to everybody for their help. I think I'm ready to download an upcoming stream replay. :D

I'm currently trying to download the following stream:

ffmpeg kind of worked, but it only downloaded part of the 94 minute show. So, I installed Replay Media Catcher 5 and it seems to be downloading more of the stream... I guess I'll find out in due course.

But if anybody can provide the ffmpeg command then I would be most grateful :)

Great info, guys.

Currently FFmpeg is dropping segments every so often. The message is usually "skipping 2 segments ahead, expired from playlists."

Do you know if there's a way to increase the cache size, or some other wizardry, that would keep FFmpeg from skipping segments?

Could also just save as. You'll need to disable flash for this to work. Works in Chrome. A lot of yahoo videos you can just disable flash and then save as.

Well getflv is a solution but with 60 bugs or more I find it rather expensive.

If you are okay with spending a little something to have a solid program, Audials Moviebox (http://audials.com/en/how_to_record_stream_capture_music_videos_movies_f rom/yahoo_screen.html) could be your solution. This software is running good and with one click you can save any video on Yahoo Screen but costs a third of getflv.

Hi, i've fixed my yahoo live script and you can use it in adownloader. To get the stream i use vlc to watch meantime the video and save it. To stop the downloading simply close vlc.

Tested https://screen.yahoo.com/live/event/clean-bandit.

It also doesn't show any bitrate version or resolution. Only a list where everything has the name "m3u8_0"

It really worked with ffdshow this time using this command


ffmpeg -i "http://yahooios-i.akamaihd.net/hls/live/202861/tristudios/livenation2p/master.m3u8" -c copy atg.ts


but the recording isn't good. Sometimes the sound stops or there are parts of the show missing and then everything is running out of synch.
So it seems that ffmpeg can't capture the stream as a whole and always missed parts and therefore the capture isn't really usable.

Some messages ffdshow gives me during the capture is "skipping 3 segments ahead expired from playlists " Maybe that's a problem?

Any further help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot

I'm feeling absolutely stupid. I couldn't figure out livestreamer, but I was able to get ffmpeg installed. Now I just don't know how to use it.

I honestly wish I knew someone to just pay to get this video file for me. This is so frustrating.

2) unzip the file in C:\ (for example)
3) so you have C:\livestreamer-v1.12.2 folder
4) open cmd.exe (command shell)
5) in this command shell go to C:\livestreamer-v1.12.2


cd C:\livestreamer-v1.12.2

7)in your command shell

livestreamer "hlsvariant://https://yahoo-live.hs.llnwd.net/livenation1b.m3u8" best -o nkotb.ts

livestreamer record in C:\livestreamer-v1.12.2 folder and the file name is nkotb.ts

I've had the live streamer running since this morning... it's currently at 2h 41m and it's going at around 760 KB/s download speed... current file is 7.12 GB...

For any pros out there: does that sound accurate? How long does it usually take, and how big is the file usually?

EDIT:- Its strange to me maybe 1st time for me.. when i sniff normal data i got max 720p in master playlist.. but when i follow up jason data for stream i got 1080p link too.... and got direct MP4,FLV links too....:D :D

Yes, there are 1080p links too. Monitor all HTTP requests and responses and you will see something like this:

When I first tried recording it grabbed from the position I was watching at the time. I'd guess the server remembers what it sent you last (possibly by IP) and continues the stream from there?

I'd recommend watching it in a browser to the end, then start recording as it loops around back to the start. That's what I did anyway.

This will write the stream in 720p to a file named sw.ts, which you can later watch with VLC or some other player.

I am going to try stopping the current stream - and then restart a new stream when the show 'loops' (seems I can't tell Yahoo live to play at the start) - is this the best way to do this?

Is there a way to avoid the 'loop' process, and download the show/files directly off the server?

I have a good internet connection and the show is being captured via live stream, and playback in web browser - however I noticed in the livestream capture box a time out occurred - (only one so far) and there was no interruption of the webbrowser play back stream is this normal?


If livestreamer works, that still pretty cool but wondered if this is the best way?

I don't see how. You just have to hit the right time to start recording. Once you do that you can watch the resulting file any time you want.

Sorry, can't help there. I just started using this tool today and it worked fine for me (well, I did use the Debian one, not the Windows one, but as far as I can tell it's otherwise identical).

Everything went well for the first 35 minutes .. then came the errors and a final Read timeout.. recording stopped :-(
Very disappointed. Oh well, I got to enjoy pretty much most of it while waiting for the stream to restart.. guess I'm shutting down here.

Would someone please explain what the best way to record/capture and view a live stream both at the same time? I would think if I was watching in my browser and using liverstreamer that I would be pulling the same data twice all at the same time (basically doubling bandwidth consumption). I have read a little bit about 'piping' but don't really understand how it works or how to attempt it.

I'm trying to figure out what the best method for the least chance of mistakes. I would prefer giving the recording priority over the VLC playback/display of a live stream.

I hope I'm explaining properly what I am attempting to ask. Please ask me for more details if I'm not explaining myself well enough. Thanks for everyone's help in the past. this forum is a great resource!

I downloaded the above video in 1080p and the sound is completely fine..only thing is i had to increase the volume.the audio is pretty low that's all but its clear only.

the sound was like very low bitrate to me, someone uploaded a .flac version of the audio from the streaming on mega and it sounds awesome! (of course it is lossy, but probably its the best you can get from the streaming)

I also think that there is only a 720p live streaming (and for the 24 hours replay), with a bitrate slightly higher than 6Mbps, and the 1080p links that you can find sniffing are from the other videos in the page, ie, currently in the link https://screen.yahoo.com/live/livenation, below the live streaming frame, there is a section called "Moments you may have missed", and that videos have 1080p links, but with lower bitrate than the 720p live streaming.

Thank you! Indeed it looks like there isn't a 1080p link. The one surya posted is just one of the other videos.

It looks like there is no way to start recording from the beginning without actually waiting for the video to loop to the beginning because the m3u8 file gets constantly updated with a list of 10 ts sub-parts. I guess you could try to figure out where it starts and ends by guessing and looping through all the numbers but probably not worth it.

Edit: Nevermind what I said before. It seems like yahoo might've changed things a little bit with their streams as they air live, where the URLs are longer and can't have the filenames manually changed to download a different segment or switch the quality number. Then when it goes to a looped replay and it's no longer live, the URLs go back to the much-shorter URLs that can be manually changed and batch-downloaded. Does anyone know what I'm referring to? I realize that ffmpeg and livestreamer both work with m3u8 files regardless, live or replay, but I'm talking about downloading the individual .ts segments.

When it aired live, the URLs were the same no matter what, always the short format, which can be batch-downloaded by simply adjusting the numbers in the filename. That no longer seems to be the case when it's playing live, or even during the beginning of the first replay. I think maybe after midnight EST is when the URLs change back to the short format. Another difference to prove I'm not crazy.. when the URLs are the longer format, the segments are roughly 8 seconds each, instead of 10 seconds per segment when the URLs are shorter. Therefore, the segment filesizes are also different. The 10 second ones average about 7.5 MB per segment at the highest 720p setting, while the 8 second ones are less than 6 MB per segment.

If anyone else has noticed this about the streams as they air live or knows what I'm referring to, I was wondering if it's possible to batch-download the individual segments when they have the longer URLs / shorter segment size. I was also wondering how long it's been like this because I thought it used to always be the same whether the stream was live or not. Thanks a lot in advance for any help.

I have tried a number of different ways, though and I haven't been able to locate or sniff out a 1080p URL

Also, as to the comment from the user wondering if things have changed, I tried to cap the concert from a whole new location - new ip, new computer and the show still started playing in the middle of the concert. I am wondering if yahoo just loops the thing now instead of feeding you from the start of the show (and where you left off).

So i'm trying to time the start of my recording with the start of the concert loop... hopefully I am successful.

Any help with the 1080p URL would be greatly appreciated - don't know if anyone will see this today - it's a 24hr loop that I assume will be over this evening.

Edit: missed a few of the posts on the last page so perhaps, because it's live streaming, there is no 1080p right now until clips get posted for later viewing? If anyone can find a 1080p url by the end of the day though, by all means, I would appreciate it. Cheers.

yahoo loops their videos. you can use ffmpeg to trim (e.g. -ss or -to or -t) the original file down to the whatever size or length you want.

example:
ffmpeg -i originalfilename.ts -acodec copy -vcodec copy -ss 00:01:00 -to 02:00:00 newfilename.ts

-ss trim to start time
-t option specifies a duration - not an end time
-to in order to end at a specified time

Again, use Chrome or Firefox, as you wish, and the developer tools\Network Monitor for get the m3u8 link. For download the stream, ffmpeg or in any case livestreamer. There are plenty of example in the forum and i prefer to not write the same things over and over again, search and i'm sure you will find it in a couple of minutes.

Thanks, I tried that. As I said, couldn't find a link that actually worked with livestreamer or ffmpeg using the network monitor, searched for m3u8 but everything that showed up looked different to what you posted. The stream seems to have gone now so it's too late.
