I recently started using Debookee to sniff out links for capturing streams. I am using a Macintosh and with Debookee, I am able to sniff out an .m3u8 link on both the Apple TV 4, and on my Mac using the abc.go.com website. I am trying to get the best quality version of 720p as I can between the two locations.

For example, I am capturing Designated Survivor s01e02 - http://abc.go.com/shows/designated-survivor/episode-guide/season-01/2-the-first-day

Now with using Debookee, I can find the .m3u8 link for the highest quality 720p version the website dishes out. For this episode it is the j.m3u8 version showing:

This gives an .mp4 file with using ffmpeg of 1280x720, 23fps, variable bitrate of about 3400, 2 channel audio, etc. Pretty good!

Now when sniffing a link with Debookee on the Apple TV 4, I can find the same j.m3u8 link, but the quality of the bitrate is better, gives overall bitrate of almost 4400. Only issue is that it puts the ads into the video capture. Is there a way to capture using the Apple TV 4 .m3u8 link without the ads??

I don't know how to modify this to remove ads, or how to download this j.m3u8 and modify that to not capture the ads with ffmpeg on the capture.

Did you try editing the m3u8, using a text editor that supports unix line endings, to remove all of the EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY sections. I'm pretty sure that all of the ads are in the discontinuity sections, and if you edit them out just right the video/audio of the main program will sync up properly and the video will look seamless.

That sounds like a lot of work though. Someone said in another post on the forum that the web browser supports 1080 on abc.com but they didn't mention the bitrate.

Have you by any chance checked cnn.com livestream using debookee and apple tv? In the web browser i only see f4m and I'm wondering in apple tv has m3u8 for the cnn livestream. Does debookee show all ssl requests too?

I just did a test, editing out the first several discontinuity sections, and using the edited m3u8 as local input to ffmpeg, and I can confirm that it works!

JonDough, thanks!!! I will give it a try myself and try and not mess up. To confirm, any section with #EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY you remove and it will remove those commercial ads?
