Here the development and shift of music carriers from LP's to music cassettes to CD's to online music services (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_online_music_stores) (MP3 downloads or subscription service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_online_music_databases)):

Which online music service (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/) is the best?
eMusic (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/eMusic-legal-mp3-free-music-downloads.htm) is my best choice for music download services. It provides cheap music and it doesn't copy-protect music files so you can listen to the purchased music on any device you have.
Yahoo Music (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/Yahoo-Music-Unlimited-Cheap-music-subscription-service.htm) is another music service I can recommend. Its subscription model provides very cheap music. Although they're DRM protected and you can listen to them on the limited number of portable devices. And you won't be able to listen to the music after your subscription ends.
However you can remove DRM protection (copy-protection) (http://all-streaming-media.com/remove-DRM-protection/), but DRM removal software are intended to make fairuse backups for the purchased tracks, so please do not abuse rental licenses (by removing DRM from music files you get by subscribing).
Finally some funding figures for the ongoing year 2011 (last updated Aug 2011). Note the high sums for streaming services Spotify and Boinc (Beyond Oblivion Inc.):

Good luck with recording streams from online music services! Stay safe and dont get caught!!

Yahoo is selling its digital music subscription service Yahoo! Music Unlimited (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/Yahoo-Music-Unlimited-Cheap-music-subscription-service.htm) to Rhapsody America.
Yahoo Music will continue to offer music videos, Internet radio and music downloads. But customers of its monthly "Yahoo! Music Unlimited" service will be migrated to Rhapsody (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/Rhapsody-music-download-and-subscription-service.htm). No firm timetable has been set. Yahoo, which expects the deal to close by the middle of year, did not disclose terms.
As part of the deal, Yahoo will promote Rhapsody on music.yahoo.com.
Subscription at Rhapsody is twice more expensive than the one at "Yahoo! Music Unlimited". Enjoy cheaper "Yahoo! Music Unlimited" while it works!

...well, I just signed up for the Yahoo! Music Unlimited (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/Yahoo-Music-Unlimited-Cheap-music-subscription-service.htm) service and it seems to have a limited amount of songs available.
I wanted to listen to all of Muse's newest tracks and they have none! They have 14 Muse songs and they're all old tracks.
I just checked out Rhapsody (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/Rhapsody-music-download-and-subscription-service.htm) and they have 97 Muse tracks.
So while Yahoo is cheaper, it's not really any good if they don't have the songs you want to listen to.
I wouldn't mind paying the higher fees for Rhapsody, so this is actually good news. :)

My favourite music downloading service is http://www.mp3obsession.com/
I like it because i can find what i want then pick where to get it from.
I used Yahoo for a while and I didn't really like it, i found it confusing and they barley had any songs i like. I've also used Limewire in the past and it's sooo not worth the hassle! Gave my pc, phone AND ipod viruses. Half the songs didnt play, it was silly. And the small matter of it being illegal!!

Napster (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/Napster-free-music-service.htm) seems pretty good and also Rhapsody (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/Rhapsody-music-download-and-subscription-service.htm) both are under $15 a month

Yahoo Music ! Unlimited stopped working a while ago. Yahoo actually redirects users to Rhapsody (http://all-streaming-media.com/downloadable-audio-and-video/Rhapsody-music-download-and-subscription-service.htm).

Harry Fox agency handles Download licensing..
..
Hint: Music Licensing is "per Song"
to explain: Minimum of 2,500 items licenses (that is 2,500 sellable copies on a song - one song).
There is a $13.00 to $18.00 per song administrative fee..
The cost per license is $0.091 per song (remember x2500 for the license fee)..
..
This all equates to over $3,000 per 10-song album...
..
But then you can sell them on the net (legally) for say $.69 each - If you sell all 2500 copies of each song (you make money)..
..
Hope this helps..

let's add some more good music download service:
check out the brand-new music subscription service called "TPM (http://vimeo.com/thumbplay/videos/sort:newest/format:video)" ( Thumbplay Music , thumbplay.com ). It has a FREE 3days trial without credit card registration, and a FREE 14days trial with credit card registration.
i can highly recommend the subscription service, it is cheap, the best funded, and the most modern and impressive development of concept/website/software of its kind. It is not Java, it is not Microsoft Visual Basic, or C++, the whole application (including the installer! ) is based on Adobe AIR technology, the successor of Adobe Flash and Adobe Shockwave. so dont be shocked when you first see it. i've warned you :D
the only problem is: it is not a download service (well, you can try to capture/record/download the streams!) but an on-demand-music subscription service. You do the downloads with your mobile device, not with your PC.
i've posted reviews for 2 other great new music subscription sites. thumbplay is really nice and modern, simfy is, and deezer is really known and popular. the newer ones all use Adobe AIR and rtmpe streaming. maybe the 3 newbies plus the famous Spotify can be included in the poll *GGG* ;) ... i am not serious with Thumbplay and Simfy. They are too unknown and small. I wrote reviews for them only because they use Adobe AIR technology which is a novelty. Spotify has got lots of attention (Try google search terms < simfy > vs. < "thumbplay music" > vs. < spotify >) and people vividly discuss it, also on youtube. Nobody knows or uses Thumbplay Music. Although i can ;) recommend it.

Amazon hasnt started a true music subscription service yet but it does have launched what they call "Amazon Cloud Drive (https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/learnmore/ref=sa_menu_acd_lrn2?tag=streamingme01-20)" and "Amazon Cloud Player (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=sa_menu_mp3_and1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000454841&tag=streamingme01-20)". The following article with all its links and referrals is highly relevant and interesting. Please read and be informed!

Yahoo! Music Unlimited had always been very limited. Limited interface, limited amount of music to listen and so on
