Hello, I'm about to show you two screenshots below, shown at the bottom of this message. The top screenshot of the two images below represents the old (and current platform for most) ESPN streams. The bottom screenshot represents what ESPN is doing for some of their new streams, and all of their SEC streams for SEC+ sports programs live and on demand.
We already know how to download the old (current) method, for most WatchESPN videos (RTMP Dump Helper works, as does Replay Media Catcher). However, the 2nd of the two screenshots below, does not work for either RTMP Dump Helper or Replay Media Cather, at least it doesn't work when using the same procedure (maybe a different procedure will work?). Notice the difference between the two screenshots below. One has 4 bars, the other has 7 bars of quality. Several of the newer videos and the SEC+ videos on demand have 7 bars of quality and seem to be impossible to catch the stream and download it. But maybe someone can help. I'm not interested in recording off the screen (I already have Replay Video Capture, but prefer not to use that for ESPN streams, as I like catching and downloading the stream much better).
Take this video link from below for example (if you have WatchESPN, please feel free to check on this yourself) ....
Here's the link to an example of an ESPN3 video that can't be downloaded?:
http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2569576/
Notice how after clicking on that link above, there are now 7 bars of quality, instead of 4 bars. Now, I know a lot of the current ESPN3 (WatchESPN) videos still use 4 bars of quality. But I have a feeling that these new videos with 7 bars of quality will be the standard going forward at some point. That means it's possible for those out there (including myself) that download videos from ESPN3, well we might no longer be able to do so in the near future, unless we can crack this code for the 7 bar ones. So far, I've had no luck with these newer ESPN3 videos, which also include all the SEC (SEC+) videos. Can anyone help? Thanks.
Please reference the "blue" circle that is manually added to both screenshots below (it is hard to see at first), but you can see in the 2nd screenshot that there are 7 potential bars of quality in the blue circle. I don't even know if the quality is different, but the WatchESPN videos in which there are 7 bars of quality seem to be encrypted differently than the traditional 4 bar videos, and so far the 7 bar ones seem to be impossible to download. Maybe there's a way to download it going the m3u8 file route?
I have never failed to be able to catch and download the 4 bar ones. But I have never succeeded yet in getting any of the 7 bar ones. As always, please feel free to help. Thanks.

I am able to plug in the m3u8 file code within the proper code in command prompt, and it says available streams, up to 720p, and even says opening the 720p stream, but then it doesn't open and gives me an error that says failed to create decryptor (see image below).

when sniffing the url, use "must contain" field to get a fast view of when the proper url/code shows up and close the browser player window the instant the code shows up, do not let browser keep playing video. Looks like this in URLsnooper:
http://i.imgur.com/WQgSb6k.png
then, as fast as you can (less than 10 seconds ideally) do livestreamer (red is exact copy/paste from urlsnooper above):
livestreamer "hlsvariant://http://content.uplynk.com/ext/d09b16c953aa40c98dd8c513526aca5a/a18444787.m3u8?ad.kv=_fw_ae,975cd70e2de25291acc0ef c98a48935e&exp=1436716966&rn=903327098&tc=1&oid=d09b16c953aa40c98dd8c513526aca5a&linearv=4&ad=e3ads&ad.ulbd=1&ad.csid=watchespn:null:e3ads&ad.caid=a18444787&eid=a18444787&euid=ESPN3_VDMS&ct=a&sig=14cd3a9de9328960b79a8c1e6bc2d9f3c68477b2a5308d c2cd394c4dbfb6e66c" best -o espn.mp4

Yeah I found it. The download is complete.
It's in my livestreamer folder, and I can move it around to any folder I like.
However, it only plays in SM Player, and doesn't play at all in VLC player, and you can only fast-forward it 10 seconds at a time, because the video player doesn't recognize how long the video is (even though the download has complete 100% in command prompt). Sorry about that--still scratching the surface and will make some errors due to inexperience.
Fairly certain the stream is probably the 2015 LSU vs Mississippi State game or the 2015 Alabama vs Middle Tennessee State game.

Also, how (aside from looking at earlier posts in this thread) do we know or determine which particular entry in URL Snooper to use for the URL section when we create the code in livestreamer?

Thanks Joe--
I have to leave very shortly--so will try later and will continue with the same LSU @ Miss State game until I get it. I tried another game last night (Oregon @ Mich St) and I got URLs that began with xhttp or phttp--if I see something like that should I remove those characters as well?
Also, I make my code in notepad using the protocol below (I was afraid MS powerpoint or word might have put in some unseen character or changed something).
Should I continue using notepad for this or is their a better or faster method?
My protocol I'm following is:
Instructions:
1.) Bring up your video you want to capture
2.) Bring up URL Snooper
3.) Ensure the Must Contain field in URL Snooper states http://content.uplynk
4.) Play the video—stop the video (close the viewer browser window) immediately when the URL Snooper collected the various URLs.
5.) Bring up livestreamer in the CMD prompt
6.) Create and enter the code:
livestreamer “hlsvariant://enter the URL from URL Snooper here” best –o name.ts
Remember:
--No space between the //and the URL
--End the URL with “
--Go over one space and best –o name.ts (could be lsu, vatech, etc—some term you can remember or find easily)
--For the URL, ensure you enter the URL that in the Protocol column, states:
http m3u8 file
(remove the x, p, or w in front of http should their be one)
Anyway, thanks again Joe--really appreciate your help. Will try again later and keep you all posted. if you see anything else I'm forgetting or doing incorrectly, please don't hesitate to correct me.
Thanks

ronlin99,
I think your issue is the code you're using. The quote and -o in particular. Paste the correct url within here livestreamer "hlsvariant://" best -o name.ts remove the character in front of http if needed, and try again. I tried and copied your code string from your post yesterday and it gave me those errors for a different game. SO i re-wrote the line and the quotes and -o were the issue.
Give it a try.

Thanks--will try in a few moments. DUMB QUESTION: In the code string you provided, and I post the URL between the second/ and the quotation mark just before best?
Is it okay to create this code in notepad? I was/am beginning to wonder if I've got some form of methodology problem (using the wrong application, operating system, etc, etc.).

IT'S WORKING!!!!!!!
1.) Copied your code into notepad, re-ran the entire protocol again 2.) Brought up URL Snooper
3.) Brought up watchespn, then the game
4.) Copied the URL into your code in Notepad (had to remove the "x")
5.) Please see CMD Prompt image of this run:

6.) It's still capturing the stream as I write this, how long does this normally take (not that matters--just curious) or how will I know when it's done?
Question(s):
Where does the Livestreamer post this file when it's finished?
If I wanted to convert, or make a copy of this file at 480p (so I can write to DVD to watch on TV), how would I do that?

Will put the file where ever you opened the cmd prompt from. In your screen shot it will be in C:\Users\Owner\
As far as converting to DVD, yes you could. What app you have to use is up to you, but it is possible no doubt.
It will say stream ended when it is finished. May turn out to be about 5-6 GB's, and at your speed in the screenshot will take a while.

Looks like this particular file will run about 1hr 30-35min to download based on the speed in the CMD Prompt and given the length of the file.
Sorry about the location question--I looked at the remainder of this thread and seems pretty simple. If I run into a problem, will seach via the Start/search button.
I have the Replay Capture Suite and 123copydvd Platinum-I like them both. For downconverting to 480p, I would probably use 123copydvd's Extract a Video Clip feature, and change the output widescreen size to 854 x 480 and hopefully that should do it. I already tried this with another 30min video and will write to disc and attempt to play on my DVD recorder/player.
I really appreciate the help from both you and joejones15 on this thread--it is getting more and more difficult just to make a disc copy of a game for personal use and posterity.
I will send screen captures of things that pop up that other DB members may need to know as I'm sure the game and other entertainment stakeholders will continue to make changes in the future.

That is normal based on the slow speed at which you are able to download the file. It is probably done soon. The line will end in cmd prompt and say "stream ended" or something like that. I forget off hand.

Just finished:

Cmd prompt will state stream ended like you stated--came in at 5.21 GBs. Your response was right on the money!!!
In other news, that method I described for down-converting via 123copydvd Extract Video Clip feature worked perfectly. Changed the Widescreen Resolution to 854x480. Will need to adjust the Video Bitrate setting, but the video wrote to dvd and played on my dvd player without problem.
Thanks for the help

If you replace 'best' with '432p' or '504p' you will get smaller bitrate without having to rencode yourself...look at your cmd line image, it tells you what bitrates are available:

I'm new to this, so bear with me.
I'm able to download the files using livestreamer, but when they are fully downloaded, I cannot play them back in VLC. They have no duration, are not seekable, and no video appears. The files are generally about 3-4 GB in size, and a preview of the video shows up in the icon and in Windows Explorer, but I cannot play it.
Any ideas?

I use wireshark to sniff out m3u8 url
You then need to copy the cookie and request from playlist.
Then play the HD-version from the playlist in ffmpeg. It can't play an adaptive playlist so you need to pick a quality level and stream that. You need the params from the original playlist url.
just replace playlist.m3u8?.... with hd.m3u8?...
or whatever the path is.
then pass the cookie with -headers

Then I use Handbrake to make it seekable and grab clips with Movie Maker or Quicktime.

From earlier in the thread

Hey guys, Ive had a lot of luck so far with using livestreamer as described on Page 1...drop the download into VideoReDo and then cut the "commercials" out (which appear to just be a void of video and audio while the timecode ellapses in real time).
However, I recently downloaded a rather large file (19GB, about 10 hours long) that is not compatible with this method...VideoRedo shows it as just over 2 hours long, and every mux program Ive tried causes it to lose sync. Any other options for editing? I tried H264TS Cutter, but it wouldnt even load it (wouldnt load a normal sized WatchESPN file either).

I did it! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Last question...
I did one game successfully, then on the 2nd game I did, it came out incomplete at 1:16 when the time of the game was 2 hours and 17 minutes. I tried it 3 times in .ts and .mp4 format, and each time it came out incomplete. Is this my fault or the fault of the espn3 stream?

Can anyone help me figure out livestreamer? When I enter the ESPN3 channel URL like so:
livestreamer "hlsvarient://http://content.xxx" best -o name.ts
I get a return like so:
error: No plug in can handle URL: xxx
I have VLC installed and it opens streams like Twitch/YouTube flawlessly.
I have also tried using the second .m3u8 that URL Snooper finds, under the protocol "xhttp m3u8 file" (have removed "x" from beginning of the link) as opposed to just the first "http m3u8 file" result. Same problem with both.
For those who cannot get it to work using Livestreamer, I was able to to use K-S-V's AdobeHDS and the HDS Link Detector add-on in Firefox to stream both ESPN and ESPN2. It will not work for ESPN3 as HDS Link Detector does not detect the link. Other than that, everything works great when streaming from the FLV. The only down side is that the max quality I was able to get was 896x504 with a bitrate of 2200. Like others have said, they protect the high quality streams pretty tightly.

It looks like WatchESPN may have changed things up slightly? I can find a "multiple.m3u8" link but livestreamer doesn't like it now. Ffmpeg can pull it down, but then it's running into "Non-monotonous DTS in output stream" errors at halftime where ESPN has inserted a "commercial break." If you scroll the playback bar in ESPN3 past halftime, when it comes back for the second half, the playback bar restarts at the beginning.
livestreamer had previously been able to pull each of the chunks out of the stream and concat them correctly (ffmpeg isn't quite doing it), but it doesn't like this new "multiple.m3u8" format. Any ideas?
*Edit: It's also interesting that the replays I'm looking at are clean feeds (no scorebugs or graphics) and not the program feed you usually see. I don't think I've ever seen that on WatchESPN.

Here's the link to an example of an ESPN3 video that can't be downloaded?: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2569576/ Notice how after clicking on that link above, there are now 7 bars of quality, instead of 4 bars. Thanks. 4 bars of Quality: http://s9.postimg.org/it5ccxrzj/OLD.jpg 7 bars of Quality: http://s10.postimg.org/mqt91zxp5/NEW.jpg *Link* to 7 bars of Quality (example): http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2569576/ RÄ?ng cá»*a bị th?°a, rÄ?ng cá»*a bị vá»?, má?» l?* nhá»?ng tr?°á»?ng há»?p th?°á»?ng gá?·p á»? nhiá»?u ng?°á»?i. I recently had to have my computer re-imaged, and lost all my downloaded software/applications. So I downloaded URL Snooper and Livestreamer (v.1.12.2), and have attempted to continue capturing streams of games on watchespn.
I have been receiving nothing but “400 Client Error: Bad Request” on all attempted stream captures.
URL Snooper seems to be working fine, but I wonder if I’m doing something wrong with livestreamer. After download, I followed all the prompts to put it on my system, but I’m wondering if there’s something else I’m supposed to do.
Please advise and any assistance is greatly appreciated--
The game I’m trying to capture is the 03JULY game between the Atlanta Braves and Florida Marlins from Fort Bragg, NC. I was trying to capture the version broadcast in Spanish.

Here's the link to an example of an ESPN3 video that can't be downloaded?: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2569576/ Notice how after clicking on that link above, there are now 7 bars of quality, instead of 4 bars. Thanks. 4 bars of Quality: http://s9.postimg.org/it5ccxrzj/OLD.jpg 7 bars of Quality: http://s10.postimg.org/mqt91zxp5/NEW.jpg *Link* to 7 bars of Quality (example): http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2569576/ http://i.imgur.com/330S9pW.png

I am having the same issue as ronlin99 above. After learning how to download the watchespn streams, I haven't had a problem until just today, I've run into the 400 Client Error Bad Request message.
Why is this happening? Has WatchESPN stopped its viewers from being able to download the streams? It seems that the quality bars have upped from 7 to 8 bars. I wonder if that's the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's still possible to find an .m3u8 link, like for example this USA vs. Costa Rica Women's Soccer game: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2834985/size/condensed/ has the following path. (It seems like j.m3u8 is now the highest quality stream - it used to be i.m3u8.
http://content-ause3.uplynk.com/multiple/022c4922d9644e1fbe26dc6811afb121,d853673b93eb444e9 dda8657bcb4179b/j.m3u8?rn=531676321&linearv=4&ad.csid=watchespn:desktop:e3ads&ad.ulbd=1&eid=a19187730,a19187730_1&ct=a&ad.kv=_fw_ae,,_fw_euid,38775BAC-4DAA-49CA-9E54-75BA654BCB73&exp=1469471720&ptid=ESPN3_Events_VDMS&tc=1&oid=d09b16c953aa40c98dd8c513526aca5a&ad=e3ads&ad.caid=a19187730&euid=ESPN3_VDMS&sig=fbb9169f7da6c2f9888a24dfa1b2888ed67a8a73e94116 4932b2d2ba164170b9&pbs=23665ded3eea414b9a504247c8902fa8
When I try to use this m3u8 link as an input and dump the file to my local drive, I'm getting all sorts of errors in framerate, video duration, etc. I think it's because the m3u8 is serving up a bunch of clips that are potentially encoded differently. I'm getting a lot of "Non-monotonous DTS in output stream 0:0...This may result in incorrect timestamps in the output file." errors in my ffmpeg output.
Anyone have ideas how better to dump these links? Livestreamer did a good job of putting everything together but it's now saying "Unable to open URL...(400 Client Error: Bad Request)" on the multiple.m3u8 and "error: No streams found on this URL" when you give a direct link to a j.m3u8 (or any other a.m3u8, b.m3u8, ect.)

Ive tried this technique on many different replays from espn and all of them have ended up with the same error.

I dont understand why this keeps happening. I believe I pulled the correct link from url snooper.

If you're getting a "Bad Request" message, this means you need to work faster. Have everything queued up and ready to go in your command prompt, so that all you have to do is paste the link.
Speed matters.

Yes, I get it done in less than 10 seconds. I never had a problem with it previously when WatchESPN was 7 bars. Now that it has switched to 8 bars is when the problems arose. Thanks for the input.

Hey guys instead of using hlsvariant:// before the link just use hls://
This works for all livestreams on ESPN 3 and all replays on watchespn

I get "could not open stream" and "400 client error: bad request" when I use the exact same format as before with only hls:// in place of hlsvariant://

Yeah, it's not working for me anymore either. Same error as everyone else, using both hls and hlsvariant.
I am able to record live streams using AdobeHDS, but not luck with replays.

So I started playing with this after reading the other replies, had no luck using the former tried and true method. After trying only the "hls" variant as suggested to no avail, I switched back to hlsvariant, but changed my batch file to get the "worst" stream. This method worked, albeit not the actual solution, as we arent doing this to get 180p. I then changed "worst" to "720p", and Im currently downloading a 720p stream. This might not be the best quality they have (presumedly 1080p is available now?), but 720p is plenty good.

Tried both versions ("hls variant" and "hls") with and without the user agent data, have tried replacing "best" with "worst" and then changing to "720p" as described above, and am receiving the same <<400 Client Error" Bad Request>
Any solution to overcome this problem is greatly appreciated.

Anyone?
Use the individual playlist/.m3u8 file. The i.m3u8 is what I've been using and it captures 720p version no issue. Either modify the multiple.m3u8 to i.m3u8, or download and open the multiple.m3u8 and copy the best version quality from within. I just choose the best version from within and it obviously selects that version, so this way I dont have to use, best, worst, 720p, etc.
This just worked for the replay of the ND vs Texas game.

What are you using to get that link? When I use URLSnooper, I don't get anything like that.
I'm trying to download the Pitt/Villanova game from Saturday and when I bring up URLsnooper and the stream and go through what I've done in the past it keeps giving me a 400 Client Error: Bad Request
I was using "hlsvariant://http://content.uplynk.com/ext ----etc----"
I'm either missing a step or the way I was doing it before is not going to work and if you could, I would love some help.
Thanks

Im using AdBlock Plus addon for Firefox to get the link. I use it, search for .m3u8. It gives me the link with "multiple.m3u8" in it. I take that link, paste it into a new browser window. SO it then pops up to download the file "multiple.m3u8". Open that file in a text editor, and copy the resolution url I want. Paste it in the code i showed before and it works.

Ahhh...I've figured it out.
Before, in URLSniffer, we were grabbing the "content.uplynk" m3u8.
It's now "content-ause1.uplynk" (or "content-ause3.uplynk" and probably other numbers, too)
Here's what my updated protocol is, and it works.
Instructions:
1.) Bring up your video you want to capture
2.) Bring up URL Snooper
3.) Ensure the Must Contain field in URL Snooper states "content-ause"
4.) Play the video—stop the video (close the viewer browser window) immediately when the URL Snooper collected the various URLs.
5.) Bring up livestreamer in the CMD prompt
6.) Create and enter the code:
livestreamer “hls://enter the URL from URL Snooper here” best –o name.ts
Remember:
--No space between the //and the URL
--End the URL with “
--Go over one space and best –o name.ts (could be lsu, vatech, etc—some term you can remember or find easily)
--For the URL, ensure you enter the URL that in the Protocol column, states:
http m3u8 file
(remove the x, p, or w in front of http should there be one)

Here's the link to an example of an ESPN3 video that can't be downloaded?: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2569576/ Notice how after clicking on that link above, there are now 7 bars of quality, instead of 4 bars.

Ive had some success with grabbing the i.m3u8 file with it showing up at 720, best quality, normal playback speed but sadly no audio. What audio I do get is 1/4 speed with an average duration of 10 seconds.
Anytime I've used any links from URLsnooper, no matter the settings I give it, will end up being a 512x386 video that has some stuttering at times and sluggish audio or it tells me theirs no content/forbidden.
Oh and using the above method, I've literally just used the i.m3u8 link found through uBlock Origin, anytime ive tried to download it and open it in notepad++ theres nothing about quality. All links are either slices or calls, not seeing anything else in there.

I did a clean install of the computer I use for video capture recently (it was overdue), and of course, things arent working as well now, and Im getting the same results as some others. It looks like rather than getting resolution options (432p, 720p, etc), I just get live (worst, best), which tends to be some other odd resolution to start, and then changes midstream. I think this is mostly due to the first commercial being grabbed (rather than starting with the broadcast itself)...before, there were just empty spots where the commercials were. Any suggestions to get that commercial free feed still? (I was still able to do it two weeks ago/pre clean install, so I doubt something changed during that time on their end?)

I'm going to throw my hat in to the ring here and someone who recently capped the ND Texas game 2 weeks ago, but can no longer get anything to go through without constantly retrying to get the 720p and then when I convert it to mkv handler it bombs out around 7%, I can't play the original on my computer either. Prior to this I had a batch file that ran everything through no hitches at all. I've tried the suggestions here with no luck.
Let's try this game
http://www.espn.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2869597/size/condensed/
Using urlsnooper I've been unable to get just the http m3u8 file prototcol. It's usually an e, p, or a t in front of the http in the protocol column.
thttp://content-ause2.uplynk.com/multiple/4b6e45126fc744ec80c918f8a52f06a9,4e6c5f5d54cc422a9 e3dc5b7d6e5424d/i.m3u8
I remove the t from the url and paste that link in the livestreamer. I'm trying the i.m3u8 because that has always been the 720p resolution. My livestreamer command is this
livestreamer "hls://http://content-ause2.uplynk.com/multiple/4b6e45126fc744ec80c918f8a52f06a9,4e6c5f5d54cc422a9 e3dc5b7d6e5424d/i.m3u8" best -o "%location%\%filename%\%filename%.ts"
I get the following forbidden error.
452
I have done some digging and if I search by content.uplynk like before I find this address for ehttp m3u8 file
ehttp://content.uplynk.com/ext/d09b16c953aa40c98dd8c513526aca5a/a19297719,a19297719_1/multiple.m3u8
If I take that url and remove the ",a19297719_1/multiple" leaving just the following
http://content.uplynk.com/ext/d09b16c953aa40c98dd8c513526aca5a/a19297719.m3u8
If I enter that in a browser I can download the file that has all the resolutions.
453
Open it with wordpad and you'll see a section for 1280x720 and it's the i.m3u8
#UPLYNK-MEDIA0:1280x720x30,high-31,2x48000
#EXT-X-STREAM-INF:PROGRAM-ID=1,RESOLUTION=1280x720,BANDWIDTH=5423261,CODECS="mp4a.40.5,avc1.64001f",FRAME-RATE=30.000,AUDIO="aac",AVERAGE-BANDWIDTH=4599404
http://content-ause2.uplynk.com/4b6e45126fc744ec80c918f8a52f06a9/i.m3u8
I try that url in the livestreamer command and I get the same forbidden error. I downloaded the i.m3u8 file and the link the I'm seeing in the error for failed decryptor is the EXT-X-KEY inside the I.m3u8 file.
If I try the livestreamer command with the url
http://content.uplynk.com/ext/d09b16c953aa40c98dd8c513526aca5a/a19297719.m3u8
the livestreamer command needs to be used with hlsvariant then so I use this livestreamer command and I still get the forbidden error BUT I see the resolutions to pick from instead of just live (best or worst)
livestreamer "hlsvariant://http://content.uplynk.com/ext/d09b16c953aa40c98dd8c513526aca5a/a19297719.m3u8" best -o "%location%\%filename%\%filename%.ts"
If I use the following URL I can download the video, but I have to check to see if I got the 720p version because the I can only pick live best or worst. If it's not the 720p, I kill and retry until I do get the 720p version. Once that is finished, I can't convert to the mkv container either, it bombs out around 7 percent with no errors. The ts file appears to play fine though from what I can tell, audio and video are in sync no artifacts.

The script I wrote for this worked flawless all last year and on the ND Texas NCAAF game this year a couple weeks ago. Not sure if I'm missing something or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What do I need to do now to get the actual video file?
You need to add the livestreamer best parameter / flag to the set of commands your executing / calling, you can't just type what it gives you, livestreamer doesn't support that, it's more of a debug feature so you know what video qualitys the stream is actually available in to suit your bandwidth, not like other command line executables that recognise y, n f1-f12 typed keys etc
livestreamer "hls://http://content-ause1.uplynk.com/multiple/66ffdd0f675a47bda46f6e4e03d9a4c1,6a9cfd8a52f9422e8 79f6dc3b1829f60/i.m3u8" best -o video.ts
I got (403 Client Error: Forbidden), so you probably need to add a useragent or flashver too or my ip address is region blocked.

I got (403 Client Error: Forbidden), so you probably need to add a useragent or flashver too or my ip address is region blocked.
what do you mean by user agent? I'm getting the same errors as everyone else.
